Diesel will not always be better.
If I had unlimited money a big block turbo gas truck would eat a diesel trucks lunch when it comes to pulling. I wouldn't care about mpg or even longevity of the engine for that matter with unlimited money.
But if you compare what the factory offers from the showroom floor the diesel does have better pulling power. Not near as much as many on here would lead you to believe but an advantage none the less. But you do pay for it. That doesn't make the diesel a better or worse choice but when it comes to pulling power it does have the advantage.
Dollar for dollar you won't out pull a diesel on the street. You might out run it but you won't out pull it.
You might want to narrow that blanket statement down a little. My '94 F150 with 300cid I-6 easily out towed my '95 Cummins powered Ram. My '05 Hemi powered 2500HD had the edge on all for of "my" Cummins powered Rams. The newer diesels are a different story.
He said if money wasn't and issue that he could build a gasser to out pull a diesel. I'm saying using the same money the diesel will still out pull his blown gasser.
It is all about compression. If the "unlimited money" gasser is going to compete with the diesel then it would have to run off AV gas (aviation fuel) and run at about 14:1 compression. The costs would outweigh the benefits. Maybe we could put a gas drag motor in a dually and go for 1/4 mile runs and it would beat a diesel... just stupid!
