I am thinking of trading my 6.0 3/4 for a 3/4 diesel... I get 8 mpg towing a 10500 lb fiver. Looking for someone who tows a similar rig with a diesel to see if the upgrade can be justified.
Understand there is no comparison on power but it still comes down to economics
Lot's of fleet cost experience here.... you will save on gas, but all the numbers I've seen tell me you won't get your money back, but you may enjoy the towing experience more.
Getting cost back????
There is cost and then there is VALUE!
Yes you will get better fuel mileage with a Diesel, will it make up for the added cost, not likely.
Huge maintenance cost! Well depends on the diesel Fords are the highest, GM next, and Cummins cost the least to maintain. Yes, I can buy a 7.99 Purolator filter, but prefer the Fleetguard for about $5.00 more. I go 10,000 miles on an oil change 3 gals. of Delo 15-40 oil, fuel filter about $20.
Value, knowing you can move the load, priceless!
Priceless is the deal for sure.. :)
Have to agree with this fact as well.. plus if you are running an oil bypass filter like the FS-2500 and doing Used Oil Analysis UOA You might be going more than 10K miles on that oil especially with the synthetic T-6 Rotella.
On amazon the fleetguard filters are 9 bucks and the mobile 1 which is a higher filtration filter is sometime less like $7.99. The cost of oil over the life of a diesel, 400K+, pulling a trailer vs with a gasser you might go 200K miles, plus the difference in MPG it for the most part becomes a wash.
So with that said you come out a happier camper with a diesel from my POV.
On a side note.. was at a customer house last week that pulls a 23 ft V nose cargo trailer that weighs 17K up and down eastern US, west to mississippi. He has a 2 1/2 yr old silverado gasser 6.0? because his wife did not want a diesel.. he gets 8-9 mpg pulling the trailer.. now he runs 70+ all the time...
he figured with the difference in MPG between gas and diesel plus oil and such he would be even at this point even factoring in extra diesel engine cost on the truck and fuel. 2.5 yrs at 63K miles and 80ish % are pulling the trailer.
