We've owned gas-engines trucks, both V-8s, 1500s, one Chevy, one GMC. The Chevy had all it could do to pull a 4900 lb. 5th wheel up a hill and tow long distance without running into the transmission heating up. We had to install a transmission cooler.
Fast forward to earlier this year. We bought a GMC V-8 to tow a 4200 lb. travel trailer. With all the hills in the northeast part of the U.S., the truck was always down-shifting and could not use cruise control.
Sooo, hubby went out and bought a Silverado Diesel. YAY! What a difference. Overkill for pulling a 4200 lb TT, but no more slowing down on hills and so much nicer with cruise control.
And one thing leads to another.......in the process of buying a larger 5th wheel, as to be able to be more comfortable inside on raining days or in the evening. I think this diesel should have no problems towing a 7500 lb. 5ver. Just hoping that mileage will not be less than 10 mpg.
Congrats on the new diesel! Here's wishing you many years and miles of happy travels. Back to the gasser for a moment. We towed with six diesels before going back to gas. We use cruise control especially in the hills around the southeast. Downshifting is normal and not a problem. I set cruise on 60-65mph and let it do whatever it needs to do. However, if it's a problem for the driver, it's a problem for everyone in the truck and headaches are no way to spend a vacation. Diesels make their horsepower at lower rpm so less downshifting and a perception of the engine not working as hard. After more than two decades of groaning diesels, I kind of like the hot rod sound of a gas V8 again.
