Along with you, I understood gas engines better than diesels. But other than changing spark plugs, oil and coolant, just how much work can the average person do on today's modern gas engines? Anything other than minor maintenance still means a trip to the shop, gas or diesel. And at least with the diesel I don't change spark plugs. But I do now change a fuel filter regularly. By browsing the forums you are doing your homework. Check the forums for all 3 manufacturers and compare the problems. That's what I did when I was shopping, which is how I decided on a 2008 Duramax. Keep in mind that a lot of the people in those forums like to chip their engines so a percentage of the failures you see probably would never happen on a stock engine.
Provided the extra cost up front and the added price/gallon (made up for somewhat by increased MPG) doesn't scare you off, you won't regret the diesel for the driving you describe.
The only problem using a diesel as a daily driver is if you have a lot of short hops that prevents the engine getting up to temperature. A 25 mile one way commute will not be a problem.
