I've had a diesel pickup as a daily driver since 1983. They're just like gas engines - they were a lot simpler then than they are now. I can't work on a gas engine any more except to change oil and filters due to all of the electronics. A lot of the problems with newer gas rigs is in the computers which you aren't going to fix at home or on the side of the road. All of the running gear is the same.
A lot of the problems you read about on the diesel forums are from people who have added chip sets, larger injectors or done something else to hot rod them which is fun to do because of the massive amounts of torque that can be generated. A lot of them run into problems because they don't do it right or only half a$$ed.
I'm not sure I understand Donn's comment about "Newer diesels do not like daily commutes"? The mfgs know that a lot of people are using them for daily communtes or like a plumber going from house to house doing repairs. Mine is almost up to operating temp by the time I'm to the end of the street.
