"Chips" are old tech. Nobody uses those anymore unless you specifically buy one for an older diesel. Engines are now "tuned" for your specific application using a programmer. Some programmers come preloaded with tunes, some do not. High performance tunes generally are harder on an engine, just like any other performance mod. But there are "towing" specific tunes which are perfectly harmless while increasing MPG's and performance. A good, written tune won't hurt an engine. Getting greedy with horsepower or overusing your right foot will. I run a street and towing tune, and it's been flawless. I ran the "performance" tune for awhile, but I could tell that the engine wouldn't last long...at least while in my possession.:)
