Differences in owing 1t vs 3/4t pickup in Ontario?

Hopefully someone based in Ontario can help me with this.

We met someone yesterday who is currently doing full-timing and he told me that as an Ontarian, if you own a 1t truck (in this case, SRW), you must go through a annual emission test (even when the vehicle is new) while 3/4t trucks are exempted from this. Hence he went with the 3/4t with modifications to pull a relatively heavy 5th wheel. Is there a truth in this?

I can't find any reference to this, so I'm hoping someone here can comment on this please.
  • I think that is only if it is commercially plated that it needs to be inspected yearly. Private use would need to be e-tested every 2 years like any other vehicle depending on year of manufacture, even years and odd years etc.
  • I think, but can't find the info on the MTO website, that is how the vehicle is used and licenced. Personal use (including RVs) or commercial use).

My neighbour (RIP) had a 3/4t Ram and he had to get the annual inspection $$$ done, because he also used the truck for pulling horse and equipment trailers. He told me if it were only for the 5th wheel , he would not have to get the inspection.

He said that the yellow inspection sticker is quite visible to the MTO inspection commercial enforcement officers (not police) and without it, pulling a commercial trailer, you would be in trouble.

  • So there's no differences between owning the 1t vs 3/4t in all aspects other than the differences in the vehicle themselves?
