- LadyRVerExplorer III agree with Salem.... I was told to leave the battery on when connected to shore power for the converter and other things like LP detector (hardwired into 12 volt).
I did disconnect mine when I was not using trailer. Used the knife blade cut off switch.
Also, when traveling down the road, aren't the trailer brakes powered by the trailer battery? - LwiddisExplorer IISolar isn’t experimental, unreliable...

Yes, as said above you need to disconnect the batteries when you leave to head home.
Not a good idea disconnecting until you get home. You need the battery connected for the break away switch while towing. - LwiddisExplorer IIInstall a solar system to charge, and keep your battery, charged. Cheaper than repeated battery replacement.
- salemExplorerIf I read it right, one of the posters said to disconnect the battery when connected to shore power. I've always been under the impression that the battery needed to be connected in order for the converter to keep it charged. In fact, that's what the dealer told me 15 years ago. Is there a different way of thinking now?
- rexmitchellExplorerThanks all. Until we can get a switch installed I’ll pull a cable.
- 2oldmanExplorer IIYep.. just pull the negative cable and you're good.
- opnspacesNavigator IIYes, as said above you need to disconnect the batteries when you leave the trailer in storage. If not the phantom loads like the refrigerator and propane detector will drain the battery in about a week. Once a battery drains it starts to take damage. The longer it sits drained the more damage it takes.
So yes definitely replace with some new batteries and then disconnect them every time when you store it.
Edit: To reflect that the batteries are disconnected when left in storage. - LynnmorExplorerAnd turn the battery off as soon as you are not using, towing or connected to power. If you bought one of those "red key" switches, know that I had two fail in one season. Get a good one like the Blue Sea brand.
- joelcExplorer IIIYes disconnect. Some RV's have a master battery turn off. When not in use the battery still drains on your CO monitor and anything else that may use it that is live.
