Sorry you have had a bad experience.
Wintersuns post has no merit as any rant on any other manufacturer......With a few exceptions of course. You cant go wrong buying any of them.
When I bought the 3500, it was only 3 years old and had 20K miles on it. Previous owner had towed a fifth wheel with it as I did once I bought it. The powertrain has been perfect, even the often maligned (on this forum sometimes) 48RE transmission has been flawless. 73K on the odometer now.
I beg to differ, but water leaks into the cab from multiple locations, needing a complete front brake job at 44K including replacement of cracked rotors, a leaking AC refrigerant system that has so far defied attempts to isolate the source, upper control arms, sway bar links and bushings, & a grenaded power steering pump are hardly 'run of the mill' issues, and some of them I view as very deficient in build quality/design and more than 'expected' maintenance. - MPI_MallardExplorerJust Love's my 6.7L Dodge Dually, 07' and 95.000KM's and not a whisper, put new brake pads on her last summer but she gets her oil changed twice a year( about every 6000KM's) and her fuel filter every winter. most reliable, well built vehicle I've ever owned and she looks soooo gooood to boot!!!

Someone told me recently that the latest 5.9 have had major problems. This someone had to rebuild his engine at 80k.
A pooched injector can wipe out the engine quickly. The general practice over on the CumminsForum is to add a 2-micron filter inline before the injection pump.
I love my '05. I wish I had more than 4 gears though; just something to think about.
x2 ... I've got a 04.5. Great truck, great engine. Need more gears.
Is there an AT with more gears that would be a bolt up?
Or is it cost feasible to change out the AT for the 6 speed manual Dodge offered?
It's not feasible to swap a better auto trans into it. Yes you can get standalone TCM for an Allison and adapters to make the swap but it's very cost prohibitive.
A 6 speed manual would be easier as you could strip all the parts from a donor with a NV5600 or G56 but still costly and time consuming.
There are enough manual trans 3rd gen Rams that if you were serious about switching you could find a new truck and sell yours. This is the best option IMO unless you're looking for a major project and have the tools and time to kill. - BluhornExplorer

Problem is that the engines are going into Dodge/Ram trucks so the "engine" may be fine but if the transmission, brakes, AC, cooling system, electrical components, or interior stuff like the lights and door switches and instruments have problems you will still be visiting the repair shop and paying out large sums.
That's the story of my '05 3500. Engine and the rest of the pieces parts to rear wheels have been great. Rest of the truck? Not so much.:(
Sorry you have had a bad experience. But with all trucks some things go with age. I think most people can agree that the majority of the Dodges hold up just fine. How we use them, where we use them, bought new or used, all comes into play on troubles we have down the line. I have had very good luck with mine.At 160 K the
only body related repair so far is a blower motor( knock on wood). The drivers seat edge is breaking down but thats with all manufacturers over time. I will say that the
interiors from the Daimler years were kinda cheap looking but seem to hold up ok. The Dodges or Rams have really improved since then and are quite an exceptional
truck although there is not a bad truck out there. All have pluses and minuses.

I drove fords before this and let me just say they all break at one time or another but RAM hit the nail on the head with this 2014 I just can't believe it can get any better.:B
You made me take a peak at the 2014 3500 Laramie. I could give up my beloved 97 CTD for that ;-) Heated steering wheel? Now that's smart!
I thought the heated wheel was ridiculous until I had to spent this winter in the NW. Now I like it! - Grit_dogNavigator07 5.9, 6 speed, 120k mi. Mostly freeway soccer mom miles with maybe 25 k towing 4-6k lb trailers and last year with a heavy truck camper for a few thou.
Has been an awesome truck with a few issues. Some self inflicted since it has been chipped since new.
New clutch at 50k. Weak link. Knew it, extra torque did it in quicker.
2 worn injectors currently. Never did anything Bette than stock 7 micron filters. Should have installed better filtration early on.
Steering box went out at 70 k. Not usual wear, it drove fine, bad shuttle valve in the power assist. Not a common problem. Have not read of this issue ever.
#4 injector line. $50 repair and 20 min.
Hydro boost pump at 75k. Not bad but couldn't keep remans in it. Finally sprung for the new style pump. $600 part.
New rear u joints recently. Expected.
NO issues with steering, front end or anything else.
Overall very happy with truck. Injectors are the only let down. - bovelloisExplorer
