Dodge Ram 48RE

I have a 05 CTD with this auto tranny. I have read alot about how it can have problems. I have about 123k on my truck. I have owned it since 87k. I fulltime and have put about 10k towing mostly through the west. I have had no problems.

I would like to here from other "owners" of this engine tranny combo. I would like to know if there has been big problems and what and at what milage. Or is it just hype.I would prefer not to hear about somebodies cousins nephews friends but from people who own these trucks.

I have pulled a 14k 5er up and down the rockies without issue. I cruse at about 62 on flat roads and let it shift down out of o/d on grades and pull hills at about 40-45. I try not to overwork the truck.

How is everybody else doing with their 48RE

    take care of the transmission and have the oil/filter changed: 30K if you pull often.

    most trans are ruined by lack, rather than over service.

    This engine is fairly easy to modify for more hp, soon you past the design limits of the trans and trouble starts. then the owners blame the sorry transmission, when in fact, excess hp, brings on harder use as it pulls harder and the owner dishes out rougher treatment.

    until it blows, the weakest point blows, the transmission, if they had spent the same or more money beefing up the transmission as they did on the motor, then maybe it would have held up and never tow more than the recommended load limit.

    but, some folks think that black smoke pouring out of the tailpipe is a sign, they are driving an 18 wheeler tractor.

    We have a 2005 3500 drw with the 48re trans. only 60,000 mi. on it. Fluid change every 30,000,atf4 and filter .The towing I do is pull a two axel trailor once in a while with my 3500 lb tractor.The truck has been used to carry a 2500 lb slide in camper for about 20,000 mi.The trans has recently devloped a 1-2 shift hunt at low speed,not a major problem I just speed up a little and it goes away.After much research on the forums and asking my friend who is service mgr at the local dodge dealer I found it is ususlly a problem with something called a governer speed valve solonid.Very easy repair with pan off at fluid change.I picked one up at the local cummins repair shop for 61 dollars and will change it out next fluid change.I will let you know if this fixes the problem.

    I bought my 2005 ram new in June '05, currently has 109,000 miles.
    Only trans problem has been bad detent causing it to be difficult
    to get out of park,fixed myself for $12 in parts and $100
    in fluid. Governor/shift solenoid replaced at 35k under warranty.I have
    towed a 11K lb Arctic Fox 5th wheel for 60K miles. It is not the most
    sophiticated trans out there but a very good one, it is still a desc-
    endant of the 727 T/Flite first brougt out in 1962.

    Yep, the tranny stands up much better in the heavier 3500 DRW trucks. It is part of the training wheel theorom. Chris

    The only thing I remember about the 48RE was the kickdown/line pressure servo. these would go bad from time to time. other than that they are a pretty bullit proof trans!

    Ours is the dreaded 47RE trans. It has 142,000 miles, at least half of which involved towing a horse trailer, and no problem yet. A re-build at a local trans shop is about $2500 and that includes a heavier Billet Torque converter. If we keep the truck we are thinking of having the re-built done before we experience a problem. Being stuck on the side of the road with 2 horses is not a pretty thought.

    Change ALL the fluid and filter and adjust the inside and outside bands. It should go for a long time with a stock engine. Bump the power and then you will need to upgrade the trans.

    I have an 06, in sig. Mine is all stock. Trans makes some noise but functions perfectly. I will drive it till it dies then rebuild it with a few upgraded components for the sake of longevity only. I will not be increasing the power of the engine.

    The 48RE was designed as a match for the stock 5.9CTD engine. It cannot handle increased power if you have any add ons for your engine.
    Basically for the 48RE you drive it till it wears out. Then rebuild it and when you rebuild there are certain components that should be replaced with mildly upgraded parts then the trans will be near bullet proof. I know many who recommend a minimum of upgraded converter, valve bodies and upgraded bands/drums. Other parts get replaced as needed.

    Ahh ok mine was a 2004.5 when they did a small bump in HP or something and salesman stressed the new 48re.

until it blows, the weakest point blows, the transmission, if they had spent the same or more money beefing up the transmission as they did on the motor, then maybe it would have held up and never tow more than the recommended load limit.

Fluid change every 30,000,atf4 and filter .The towing I do is pull a two axel trailor once in a while with my 3500 lb tractor.The truck has been used to carry a 2500 lb slide in camper for about 20,000 mi.The trans has recently devloped a 1-2 shift hunt at low speed,not a major problem I just speed up a little and it goes away.After much research on the forums and asking my friend who is service mgr at the local dodge dealer I found it is ususlly a problem with something called a governer speed valve solonid.Very easy repair with pan off at fluid change.I picked one up at the local cummins repair shop for 61 dollars and will change it out next fluid change.I will let you know if this fixes the problem.

to get out of park,fixed myself for $12 in parts and $100
in fluid. Governor/shift solenoid replaced at 35k under warranty.I have

sophiticated trans out there but a very good one, it is still a desc-

It has 142,000 miles, at least half of which involved towing a horse trailer, and no problem yet. A re-build at a local trans shop is about $2500 and that includes a heavier Billet Torque converter. If we keep the truck we are thinking of having the re-built done before we experience a problem. Mine is all stock. Trans makes some noise but functions perfectly. I will drive it till it dies then rebuild it with a few upgraded components for the sake of longevity only. I will not be increasing the power of the engine.

The 48RE was designed as a match for the stock 5.9CTD engine. It cannot handle increased power if you have any add ons for your engine.
Basically for the 48RE you drive it till it wears out. Then rebuild it and when you rebuild there are certain components that should be replaced with mildly upgraded parts then the trans will be near bullet proof. I know many who recommend a minimum of upgraded converter, valve bodies and upgraded bands/drums. The 48RE came out around Feb/March of 03, I know this as I had to wait for about 4 months for the 48RE to come out before I could get the 03 3500 with the 305/555 motor that I ordered.
