Dodge Ram 48RE

I have a 05 CTD with this auto tranny. I have read alot about how it can have problems. I have about 123k on my truck. I have owned it since 87k. I fulltime and have put about 10k towing mostly through the west. I have had no problems.

I would like to here from other "owners" of this engine tranny combo. I would like to know if there has been big problems and what and at what milage. Or is it just hype.I would prefer not to hear about somebodies cousins nephews friends but from people who own these trucks.

I have pulled a 14k 5er up and down the rockies without issue. I cruse at about 62 on flat roads and let it shift down out of o/d on grades and pull hills at about 40-45. I try not to overwork the truck.

How is everybody else doing with their 48RE

Thanks

  • I have an 07 Ram 2500. It was built in 06 and has the 5.9 CTD with the 48RE tranny. I am the original owner and have been towing a 10,500 lb Fiver since I bought it. It has also towed boats and many other things too numerous to mention. 150,000 on the odometer. I change the fluid every 45-50K,including a filter. That's it for the tranny. No issues. I'm leaving for a two month trip at the end of January, covering thousands of miles and 7 States. Not a worry, great truck. Whats that tell you?:B
  • I had 2 Rams with this tranny and never a stitch or hint of problem with the 48RE ,combined mileage 375,000.Nephew runs 8 Rams with the 48re in his heavy construction business and abuses everything way too much.He has had a shifting problem in a 2007 2500 to repair, don't know details. He also has some Fords but of course has had motor problems, don't think any transmission problems.Interestingly for what ever reason won't run GM,says he doesn't like them.
  • Our is an '05. Haven't heard any bad about the 48RE.

The one that had all the problems was the 47RE.

The only problems I ever heard about are those that chipped the motor for maximum power. The power released by chipping was then too much for the tranny.

Have driven ours 99,000 miles, 22,000 of it towing an 8100 pound travel trailer.

From a former lifelong Chevy man, this Dodge is the best truck I have ever owned.
