Lancekeys,
I have a 1998 Dodge with the V10. Best truck for the money in 1998. I believe the motor and trans option was only 500 dollars extra. No problems except for 1 automatic door lock is intermittent on the passenger side. Tow my 18 ft boat with my 10 foot lance camper with no problem. economical gas mileage when loaded. 8 to 9 camper and boat. That includes launching and loading/unloading the camper. 10 to 11.5 camper only.
Highly recommend if it has been taken care of. Have a reputable mechanic check it out. The torque curve on the Dodge V10 is the best out there for a gas motor. Over 400 lbs at 1500 RPM. 450 lbs at 2500 RPM. I cruze in overdrive loaded at 1600 RPM at 57 MPH. Quick downshift to drive puts you at max torque with the 3.55 rear end. Horse power is not high for such a big motor 300 at 3500 RPM, but the torque curve more than makes up for this.
I'm keeping mine!
That is impressive! I wonder how it compares to the GM 8.1L & Ford 6.8L V10 torque curves. (don't mean to hijack, just curious)
I found a graph of a stock 2003 8.1L and it shows the torque passing 400 at about 1200rpm, hitting about 430 at 2500. I'd say that's pretty comparable.
Well I must stick up for the Dodge Boys here!
RPM Dodge 8.0 V10 Chevy 8.0 V8
1000 TQ 400 HP 230 TQ 380 HP 90
1500 TQ 440 HP 250 TQ 420 HP 115
2000 TQ 450 HP 260 TQ 425 HP 160
2500 TQ 450 HP 270 TQ 440 HP 210
3000 TQ 445 HP 285 TQ 450 HP 270
3500 TQ 440 HP 300 TQ 450 HP 340
They are comparable with the Dodge having more low RPM power (much like a diesel) and the Chevy with more Mid range RPM power. The Ford 6.8 V10 is lower along all RPM ranges but is a smaller motor. The Dodge with the 3.55 rear end and the Ford get better gas mileage than the Chevy from what I've seen and experienced. Countless Class C motorhomes have the Ford two valve per cylinder V10s. My Dad routinely gets 9 to 10 MPG with his 24ft minnie winnie slide out on a 450 chassis.
I wonder if we will see any gas motors in the same league again? I hope so when I replace in 5 years.
