Down Sizing A Pop-Up

We have been thinking about down sizing as far as demands of putting up the popup to a fiberglass molded like a Scamp. I did notice yesterday when opening up the zippered windows on the popup that it required more crawling then I remembered. At 60 years old, that is starting to make a difference.

I did though come across another choice. It is the bunk ends that are difficult to me. We have the electric thing that raises the top but this one doesn't have the bunk ends and still looks nice so it is on my "maybe" list: I know in the past that Palomino did a pretty good job with their popups.

Just thought this might be something others would want to consider. We really like the openness of the popup and really are reluctant to give it up to be in an enclosed box and we have had those types before always returning to a popup.

Have you looked at an "A" frame hardsided pop-up such as Aliner or Chalet?

Sorry did read the entire thread before posting. I see that the hardside popup has been mentioned.

FWIW we had bought a 2015 Jayco Sport 12HMD (Hardside popup) We had nothing but issues w/ the "coolcat" heatpump/AC. The dealer (Tennesse RV) bought it back and made use a great deal on a KZ.

We looked a a Casita (similar to a Scamp), but we felt claustrophobic. We recently bought an Aliner Ranger 15 (a hard-sided pop-up that can be put up in about 2 minutes - really!) with the cassette potty option and Cool Cat heat pump (11,500k a/c plus heat pump heater), and we love it! There's enough room for two (60x80 queen bed), plus the dinette makes into a roomy single bed when our granddaughter gets old enough to start coming with us! It fits into our garage, too. The Aliner Expedition is about the same size but has more standard options.
    Aliner

I've had both a Scamp and an Aliner and while the Scamp is a well made unit, I did feel much too confined. The Aliner is more like a big tent on wheels without the fabric sides. The newer Aliners have optional dormers to provide more space and though the present dormers have fabric sides, Aliner is developing units with hard side dormers. I have not been able to see a hard side dormer unit yet but anticipate viewing one soon (I live less than 10 miles from the factory).

The Aliner will not have the interior space of a pop-up, but there are many other advantages especially with setup, traveling and no complicated lift mechanism.

    More at my campers.
  • I'm so glad you posted that. I want a pup but the wife wants a tt. With that floor plan it's kinda the best of both worlds.

  • Yes, I saw that 14ULC about a year ago and I like the looks of it. But a used Aliner came up for sale and I'd always wanted to try one like that, so I bought that Aliner instead.

I have had a fiberglass Burro and I also have a Lil Hauley empty FG shell for my work (hauling light cargo around town). The FG eggs only knock about 2 to 2.5 mpg off what I get with the Alner popup, so the streamlined shape really offsets much of the extra height. The Aliner has been fun but I've never had so many little nuisance things need fixing as I do with this 5 year old popup. The big side windows and open feeling (no upper cabinets) are nice. But I sure get tired of bending down for everything I need. That upper storage in the Burro was nice to have. And they feel more sturdy and secure in a storm, too. If money weren't tight, I'd buy an Escape FG trailer from Chilliwack BC... good workmanship.
  • The Palomino is designed like the small Class C M/H's were designed back when. The couch made a bed and the dinette made a bed, then there was a bed in the front overhang. It is a pretty good idea if you do not need the extra room the bunk ends provide.

I wouldn't mind that type as well... Of course you will have to make up your beds from the couch seating or wrap around seating on the other end... With just one couple this might be a good deal for you...

With the top coming down for travel sure is big deal for getting great gas mileage.

Too bad that 14ULC model doesn't come in an OFF-ROAD with a front deck. Our front deck and the truck bed sure can carry some serious camping supplies for us...

Our OFF-ROAD POPUP has all of the modern conveniences but does not have move around room. Makes us live more outside when setup haha... With just the two of us one tent bed becomes our day time catch all area... I have my RV Internet all setup on one flat desk board so I usually lay it in the unused tent area

We did try to go to a regular trailer trailer once but ended up giving it to the kids. Been avid tent campers since the 60s the POPUP trailer suits us just fine. We also still tent camp alot as well. Love sitting up a tent site when camping close to the creeks and back in the woods places...

The more I look at them this arrangement grabs my attention as well...

We are in ours 70s and still doing it...

  • So basically a popup without the pull out bunk extensions. I love the open feeling. A Scamp or something similar would surely cause my claustrophia (sp?) to kick in. I've camped in everything from a van to a class A and I think I enjoyed the popup the best.
