Electrical Plug Inside the pickup box

When towing a 5th wheel is it advisable to install the electrical plug inside the box? I have a factory tailgate. The hitch installer said he has not installed a plug inside the box in the last 5 years?

  • I prefer to reach over the side of the bed and plug in after hook up without getting into cramped quarters. I put mine just in front of the fender well. Bargman makes a plug and play hook up into the factory harness for the Ford. Don't know about other brands.
  • I plug mine into the bumper 7 pin and never an issue (6 years now). I know that the additional in bed 7 pin extender requires additional splices in the wiring (even from factory). Here in the northeast (salt), less splicing of undercarriage wiring is best especially after a few years of salt exposure. Just my opinion.
  • Our Truck came from the factory with the 5th wheel hitch and factory plug inside the bed, drivers side near the tailgate. Our second truck and both inside the bed...
  • We have the 7 pin cord from the 5vr. Have always plugged it into the truck box sidewall receiver. Had problem near Ft. St. John, B.C. where the receiver, in the bed, stopped working. So plugged the cord into rear bumper electric receiver and put the remaining cord excess into the bed of the truck. It bounced out or threaded out of the bed of the truck onto the road and by the time I figured out there was a problem- the outer insulation and 4 of the 7 wires were bare down to the wire including the electric brake wires. Got to a campground in Ft. St. John--parked it--and went to work splicing the wires back together. Then got a roll of Duck Tape and taped it all to the bed of the truck. Didn't move until we got back home in So. Calif.
    Always carry Duck Tape !!!
  • I recommend a 7-pin should be mounted in the truck bed.
Plenty of plug and play wiring options. Dealer spliced mine.
  • I have and inside the box hook up on my rig. Much easier than letting it hang down between the bumper and fifth wheel. I think neat is always better. Nothing hanging out of the truck bed everything stable JMO

RAM actually has a plug and play kit for your truck. I personally would do it. I have towed for the last 10 years with the cord over the tailgate but the new 15 has it in the bed and it is a lot better that way.

Thank you, mine is a 2014..... so the part you speak of is a Ram accessory part that I can purchase?
