ever clean and shine your tool box

Getting ready to re install my " old " tool box on my new F150. Thought I would clean and shine it up first. Anyone ever do this? It is a aluminum box I think with the waffle like metal plating finish. Got it from Lowes I think, but they are all about the same. Will car wax work on it? Thks

  • Thanks for the link. They did a fine job on that 47pu. I hope mine turns out 1/2 that nice. Luckily mine has not been installed on the new f150 yet so it should be a bit easier.
  • Check this out... http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/how-articles/47622-diamond-plate-aluminum-dullsville-mirror-shine-1947-chevy-pickup.html
  • I had a long talk with these guys yesterday. http://www.autogeek.net/dual-action-polishers.html. The guy said it will be much easier and faster to get the right equipment and do the polishing in 3 steps - coarse, medium and fine grit pads and compounds. I have a lot of area to cover so I'm getting ready to spend the bucks to do it right and I hope a lot faster. Craig
  • Diamondplate is aluminum, not chrome so its going to be a messy job.

As an alternative I would look at covering it with a good durable black roll on truck bed liner material.
  • Try washing it with TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) first. Available about any place that sells paint.

I did the roof of my old TT with it and what a difference. I used the powder and put about a cup in about 3 1/2 gals of water. used a soft brush and rinsed it a lot.
  • One is supposed to clean a twuck or tool box?!?!?!?! wow, really! hmmmmmmmmm

  • I used the al or chrome polish on mine, as you it moves from one truck tot he next.
but, boy o boy it was slow and a lot of work, rubbing then got one of those drill units, still that black crud just did not want to come off.

I wound up cleaning the sides and back and top around the edges.
do not remember if I ever finished the center top as no one sees it.

then waxed it good, it looked good for a while, but I am not into show and go.

just start and run well is all I need.
  • Mothers Chrome polish and Mothers Power Ball is the ticket. Follow up with your favorite car wax.

The Chrome polish and Power Ball will make the tool box look like brand new and the wax will prevent oxidation.
  • Probably would, but think I might try chrome polish, as I think they have a chrome finish, don't they?
