1500HD was an in-between model...between the 1500 and 2500. The payload and towing were more than a 1500 but not quite 2500. I dont' have the exact figures but I am sure they are online. Ford did the same thing for a few years...they had an F150, F250, and F250 Super Duty. Eventually, the Super Duty stayed and the F250 went away.
Bottom line: From a naming convention, the 1500HD went away. But, the 1500 evolved into a sort of HD model...look at the numbers today of a 1500 (and the axles, etc) and you can see a huge difference between current an 10 or 15 year older 1500.
