Always say to use their GVWR's instead of marketing badging...but seems most
everyone insist on using the confusing marketing badges
That 1500HD the OP mentions is most likely a 8,200 GVWR half ton, which I call
the fake half ton
'Half ton' spans +6K GVWR to +7K GVWR to +8K GVWR. Insist on using marketing
badging and they are all 'half ton', or 150's, or 1500's.
Or my tongue-n-cheek K3500 Suburban. Tongue-n-cheek because it has the same rear
6,000 GAWR as the 1 ton dually of that year. Ordered it with the F60 option, which
is the 1 ton front torsion spring bars. That 1 ton dually has a front GAWR of
5,250 and my Sub has a 4,250 front GAWR...what does the 1 ton front torsion
spring bars then make my front GAWR? Stays 4,250, as that is what the tags say
This is a forever endless cycle of "what's on first" and "whose on second"... using
marketing badging
There are +20,000 GVWR FIVE lug wheeled trucks....but that +20K GVWR
remains the same no matter what the marketing badge says. Ditto the
ring gear dia...ditto everything used to ID it's class other than the GVWR
So is a 8,200 GVWR a half ton, 3/4 ton and a few decades ago it would have
been the 1 ton...but wait...8,200 GVWR hasn't changed has it?...but the marketing
badging changes with the wind and whim of the fashion statement crowd that the
marketeers target...
