External Sirrius/XM Antenna

Hi All,

I have a new truck and the radio head has the satellite receiver built in. When the truck camper is on the truck the overhang blocks out the satellite signals except when heading south.

I have owned mobile satellite units and are familiar with the plug in antennas that attach to them, but what antenna is out there that would attach to the trucks radio to get better satellite reception?

Gary off topic - we use one of these for helping sleep with tinnitus. Sound machine

On topic - Our 2013 factory antenna seems to work fairly well, however we sometimes lose the XM signal while heading north, but if in a canyon, we just throw in a CD. Haven't seen an inexpensive and painless way yet to fix it, but it's not often a problem.

There is a place below glove box which I removed on right and I disconnected the plug there and plugged this one in and I receive XM 100 % of the time. I have it setting in front of wipers on 2006 3500 Dodge.
  • We moved the magnetic antenna on the center front of the hood. No problem with reception in any direction or opening the hood.

    Radio Classics rock!
  • We have XM Satellite in the Truck using the External antenna mounted on the front edge of the Truck hood. Works fine 90% of the time. Most signal fade seems to occur in the trees when traveling north. Bu this is not very often. We move the XM into the Camper when parked. Placing an external antenna in the Drivers side window of cab over. Sometimes we are not facing the correct direction for satellite reception...then I will either dangle the antenna out the window or in a few extreme cases I have placed the antenna on the Camper roof for the night.

I too am a dedicated Radio Classics listener....Ironically in the truck while traveling I stay alert by listening to stories. In the Camper at night concentrating on Old Time Radio stories helps me go to sleep. The concentration helps dramatically in covering my tinnitus. I have been a dedicated XM Old Time Radio Classics listener since XM radio became available.

I tried the magnetic antenna as suggested by TruckCamperMag a while back and lost the GPS. Switched back to the factory antenna, at least it seems to work pretty well for GPS even with the camper on. I own a 2012 RAM; the antenna connection is behind the passenger’s side kick panel.

That is what I was afraid of. My Sirius works till I head NE and then it drops in and out. Most of the time other directions work fine. The GPS works with the camper in the truck. I also use a Garmin portable because I can plan trips on Map Source and then download the routes to my Garmin.

Now the only problem is this year we are planning a trip going to Maine and points further north so we well be heading almost NE all the way there. :( I'm lost without my channel 82 Radio Classic (I like my old time radio shows) and that is what my radio is turned to unless they start repeating and then it is to the 60s and 70s music.

  • My F-250 is old and did not come with a satellite radio, but we have a portable unit. I have had to stick the magnetic antenna way out on my hood to get good signals, but it works great that way.
Using a portable radio also allows us to use a docking station with speakers inside the TC. I have a separate antenna I run through a window so that I can position the antenna where it gets the best signal. This way we can listen to radio stations wherever we are camped.
  • Last I read it's behind the glove box. At least on my megacab it is. The roof antenna is both sirius and gps. I've always used the windshield gps's anyway since I think they are more accurate and certainly easier to update and modify so that wasn't an issue for me. I haven't installed a magnetic antenna for the sirius yet. I keep forgetting about it.

Guess that means I'll have to be more talkative while driving again. :(
  • I'll be watching this I have the same problem.

On my 2011 Ford I had to buy a new puck like they used on the roof because both the GPS and Sirius antenna were in the one puck. So when I tried the magnetic one on the hood I had great Sirius reception but no GPS.

I'm not sure on the Dodge if the magnetic one well work if you have the GPS. Also I don't know where the SXM box is located on the Ram. The Ford it was on the driver side, and it appears on the GM it is behind the glove box. I hope someone knows.

It must be nice to live where you can work on your truck at this time of year. Right now it is 33* with a wind chill of 17.5*

I'd assume that most of the magnetic aftermarket antennas would work.
