F150 3.7 v6

Howdy,

I was just curious how many have towed a travel trailer with a f150 3.7 V6? I knew of one from the Ford forums who towed his hybrid travel trailer throughout the Rockies and it performed really well and he's very happy with it. I was planning to tow a fiberglass egg style camper with it like a Scamp or an Escape.

What interests me is when not towing running errands or exploring it would get pretty good gas mileage yet be able to safely tow a travel trailer/base camp, be economical yet have a long service life.
  • I own the F150 3.7 / Hybrid combo that has crossed the Rockies twice now, (4 times really I suppose).
My suggestion would be to wait till spring, the all new F150 will be appearing, (and unlike the all new Tundra, it will actually be more than cosmetic changes, pfft).
Each new truck seems to be a giant step forward, I hav no doubt the new F150, which starts production Feb 14, will be the same. Maybe a 9 speed trans if we are lucky!
  • I would stay FAR away from the pentastar engines.

If you are never going to require more of it than the trailers you mentioned then the v6 powered F150 should be perfectly fine.

I would personally get a Hemi equipped RAM with the cylinder shutdown capability.

I know what you mean by wanting the step for ease of getting in & out of the box. I use mine on a regular basis and I wouldn't be with out it. The step that the 2014 GM Twins have incorporated into the bumper is only about 3" lower than the top of the bumper and it is basically useless when stepping down from the box.

You need to check this out. Amp Bed Step

Interestingly, the Ram, which is not known for high payloads in the 1500 series, has more payload than the F150 in this test.

As a Ram fan, I always like to see them come out on top. That said, I have a HARD time believing that a 1500 normally aspirated V6 4x2 truck has an MSRP of $36,000!!

  • I think the V6 would probably do OK pulling an egg around... They don't weigh much IIRC, and are a bit more aerodynamic.

I understand your Chrysler-phobia... I wanted a Ram, but the dozen or so Chrysler's we've had are holding me back from getting another. One day I'll probably give them another shot, but not soon.

  • Hey Womps, Thank you for the reply and yes I did read and view their review of the new Ram V6 8 speed vs the F150 3.7 v6. Actually I thinks it's great that Ford, Dodge and now GM with the new 4.3 v6 are offering these new beefed up economical V6's. These companies V8's are excellent but not everyone needs a V8. I'd hate to get a V8 when a V6 will work fine based on my needs and will use it well within what it's rated for.

That new Ram Pentastar V6 paired with the 8 speed transmission and other items equipped to make it more aerodynamic with saving fuel really interests me but based on my past experience of selling Chrysler products it scares me thinking of the long term reliability. Every manufacturer has had their issues and no vehicle is perfect but from my experience and again I'm stressing my experience with selling lots and lots of Dodge/Ram trucks new and used to they just didn't seem to age very well to say the least and I came from growing up in a Mopar family driving Plymouth/Chrysler cars. I really sincerely hope Chrysler changed in that respect. I know it's subjective in saying this but I think they have the best looking truck yet I don't trust it for the long term in a 1/2 ton and I plan to drive my next pickup till it dies being hopefully a long time.

I also like that tailgate step in the f150. Save my knees as I get older. Lol

    Anyone? F150 with the 3.7?
  • Check out the September/October edition of Truck Trend. They compare a V6 F150 Ford & a V6 Ram 1500. Interesting read.
