F150 5.0 vs Tundra

Good Morning!

I have a Springdale 260TBL that checks in a 4890 Dry. We have been towing it with a crew cab GMC 1500 with the 5.3. The truck handles it fine but it is very under powered. The truck has 210,000 miles and its time to replace it.

We have 3 kids so I am totally digging the size of the cabs on both the F-150 and the Crew Max Tundra. We keeps vehicles for a long time. Honestly, I like the look of the F-150 and I know it has more features. I would only be interested in the 5.0 Motor with 3.73 rear end. I'm sure its much better on fuel as well.

I am attracted to the Tundra for its durability. I still see a ton of 2007 models on the road that aren't even rusty.

Is the reliability and resale worth more than the features and high tech design of the new F-150?

must be nice to live out of the rust belt

There is plenty of rust in Vermont. My 2007 Sierra needs rocker panels, cab corners, and door bottoms. The 07 Tundra's around here seem less rusty than my GMC.

My neighbor bought a brand new f150 in 2009. By the end of 2013 the cab corners were rusted through. He brought it back to Ford and they told him to pound sand.

I'm not sure how the aluminum will hold up over time. I'd like to believe it will be more reliable in the long run, but I've seen plenty of oxidized aluminum around here. I can't help but wonder how paint will stick to it down the road.

I believe you will find. The so called quality gap between Ford, GM, and Toyota was closed YEARS ago. I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time as well. I just traded a 13 year old F150 for a "new used" F150. The 13 year old truck looked like new. No rust, No bad paint. ran great. Keep them waxed. Paint will last forever. So why did I trade it? Well. I wanted to. Got the fever. BTW, It had the 5.4, and 3.55 gears. Towed the TT like a champ. Which also comes it at 4811lb dry, In the 6000lb area wet.

I got the F150 SuperCab with a 5.0, and 3.73 gears, and it is 4x4. While the 5.4 did a really good job with the TT. The 5.0, 3.73 does GREAT. I can highly recommend it. I really like the way I can turn off as many gears as I want. That really is handy while towing in the mountains.

Also be aware. the 3.73 gears are hard to find. But they are out there. I'm sure a dealership could find what you want with out ordering new.

It is hard to beat the reliability of the Toyotas. I think long term, the Toyota will give longer service without any issues than the Ford. I am talking about 200,000 plus miles over 15 plus years.

    I don't think a 5.0 F150 would be any different.

  • My friend has a '15 F 150 V6 Ecoboost with 331 gears. Pulls a 7500# Arctic Fox and stays right with me on mountain passes and gets decent mileage. If I could get by with a half ton it would be a no brainer for me.
  • I have a 2016 f150. haven't had it long enough to give a lot of insight but I have the 5.0 with 331 gears. LOVE IT. gets good mileage (way better than my WJ) and was WAY more affortable than a Tundra. Also love the aluminum (with ford backed undercoat for life on the steel frame)

for me it would be an easy choice.
