I don't know, if he's really getting 28 highway there aren't a lot of other vehicles that can comfortably carry a family of 5 and return that kind of fuel economy. I happened to see one of my cousins last weekend and she has a new hybrid Highlander, which you'd think would be the gold standard for that scenario, and she told me it gets around 28 highway.
I personally wouldn't buy an EcoDiesel due to the potential for a major injection pump issue, but they get very impressive mileage.
Drove to New Orleans with the Family and two friends of the kids in my truck and the wife's 200 Limited at the time. Our average speed was 77 mph. On the trip down the truck made 27.8 average trip back still running 77 mph average the truck made 27.3. This was without the GDE tune. She has made this mileage since day one and towing our boat she returns 19 running 65. The 200 averaged 30/29 for the new Orleans trip. Her 2015 300 S made 28 average in December going to Coco Beach but I was running a lot faster than 77 mph also. :W
I'm guessing by your last statement you wouldn't own anything diesel? Well other than the Ram Cummins with the CP3 pump than?
Don
That's what I drive...a Ram with a Cummins. - 2112Explorer IIMy DW drives a 2015 Edge Ecoboost and averages 27 mpg. It rides better than my truck and has more room but I wouldn't be towing anything with it.

21 mpg is nothing to brag about. Like I said the reason the F150 will be fallowing Ram and adding a diesel is the up coming new MPG regulations on pickups. FCA just happened to have a good reliable small diesel in house.
My 4X4 pick up was running 28 mpg @77 mph on the highway all day long. Now with the GDE tune I'm running 30 @ 77 mph, no BS believe it or not.
GDE is working on the baby Dmax doing tune testing right now. As a OEM provider of ECM programs they know exactly where to make changes, to maximize fuel economy and wake up the engine without compromising its life.

If your only priority when purchasing a vehicle is maximum fuel economy, buying a truck is a mistake. However, since many people use pickups as fashion statements and commuter cars, I think the diesel is a great choice and Fiat was wise to offer it. But the little diesel flat won't cut it for some people's needs.
It's also worth noting that fuel expense is just one part of the equation of vehicle operating expenses.

Our Edge Ecoboost can do all of that, and the ecoboost engine was only a 900 dollar upgrade (try to buy the diesel upgrade with only 900), we didn't need to buy a tune, and the backseat is quite roomy for 3. And in an emergency handling situation, I'd rather be piloting the Edge than a truck. - 2112Explorer III own one of the original units rolling off the line. I bought it in March 2011.
56K miles on the odo without a single issue, 22K of that towing heavy. It has never been back to the shop for anything other than trans flush and tire rotation. I change my own oil which is a pita on this truck.
I'm currently getting 20.5 mpg driving to work and back, mostly highway with a few miles of city. Towing my FW in my sig will earn me 8-12 mpg depending on conditions.
Engine braking? No such thing with this engine. It tries, I'll give it that.
Don, let's see your truck haul my FW through the mountains, or even on the flats. Yea, that's what I thought!
I can say this IS the best truck I have ever owned but I have never owned a 1 ton diesel dually so what do I know. - Perrysburg_DodgExplorer

Don - SamsonsworldExplorer42K on my 2013 XLT 4wd Screw. Hands down, best truck I've ever owned. No issues at all. Gets better mileage than my ex 5.3l Chevy or 5.4L Ford 3v along with a LOT more power.

Well, I don't know about bragging, but 21 mpg when you're not towing and 365 hp/420 ft/lb under the hood for when the trailer is hooked up is pretty nice. - FordloverExplorer
