I really didn't want to buy my next vehicle based on the needs of the camper, since we only go a few times a year, but it also doesn't make sense to own 3 vehicles right now. I was really hoping to find something that serves my non camping needs and while it may not be the ideal tow vehicle would still easily tow the camper safely.
You gotta pay to play. 4 hour trips 5 times a year? That's like many other families and weekend RVing. F-150 is good. So is the Ecoboost. But Crew cab half tons typically have 1200-1500 pounds of payload, and more heavily optioned ones have less, some as low as 800 pounds! Just get a max tow or HD payload F-150. There is little compromise compared to every other F-150 from a ride, handling, and fuel economy standpoint.
Another point. Test drive new 3/4 tons. They are advanced in design by one or two generations depending on brand. They will probably get better fuel economy than your 5.3L. My 3/4 ton Suburban gets better fuel economy in every situation than my 2003 F-150, with far more power and capability (except truck bed) and rides as well. It isn't as good as a today's half tons, but vehicle overall have improved.
Any crew cab pickup will likely tow your TT much better with more trans gears, power, and wheelbase. But soft suspension is still the limit with most of them.
