F250 3.73 to 4.30 axle ratio

I have a 2017 F250 4x4 crew cab, 160" wheel base, 6.2l gas, 3.73 gear ratio. I am trying to see if having 4.30 axle ratio gears installed will make much difference regarding 5th wheel towing. I noticed that the Ford Towing Guide shows an increased max loaded trailer weight increase of 2,500lbs with the 4.30 gears as opposed to 3.73 gears. Also, if anyone knows the average cost of this gear swap, that would be helpful. We are looking at going from a trailer to a 5th wheel and could use the extra max loaded trailer weight that the different gears should provide.
Thanks....
  • What are you pulling now and how does your truck do? I agree with the above, pull with it first then decide if you want to change.
  • Yes it will tow much better. And you will more than likely see a .5 mpg improvement with them.
Also you will need to do front and rear axles.
  • It will help a “fair amount”. Hard to explain to someone who doesn’t have a feel for it, but I’d equate it to, say, adding maybe 30-40hp. IF you’re in the right rpm range for towing. IE, may do the same or a bit better with 3.73s in a lower gear than 4.30s in a higher gear, but 4.30s too low to run the lower gear.
Generally yes it will be better though.
Enough to spend $2-3grand upgrading? Not in my opinion.
If you have larger tires, swapping to the smallest tires you can run will have a similar although less attractive effect.
Few hundred for a good tuner that gives you a 30-40hp bump on premium will have a similar effect.
But none of these will make the truck haul or handle a 5ver better, only more power.
And if you’re at the point that you’re at the limit of what the 3.73s will do to your satisfaction, 4.30s will seem like you flushed money down the toilet.
JMO. Keep what you got and if it ain’t got enough power, get a blower for the 6.2 or get a diesel.
  • I'd get the trailer and try it before spending the money on an axle gear swap.
I think time2roll missed that his is a 4wd truck. That $900 to $1,500 is should be per axle so your actual cost is double that.
  • It will tow a bit better, but much of the reason for the increased ratings has to do with less load on the transmission and cooling system.
  • Only smaller 5ers will work well with a 3/4 ton truck. Is that what you want?
  • Get the trailer first as 3.73 will pull just fine a few times. Gears do not increase payload, just increases the combined weight rating. Cost to swap is $900 to $1,500.
  • YES.......Lower Gear ratio (4:30) allows for higher tow rating

    BUT.....your 2017 F250 has a 6200# RAWR
5th wheel PIN Weight is carried by rear axle.

I have a 2007 3500 SRW with same rated rear axle. Tow a 14K 5th wheel with a 3080# WET Pin weight. That puts be right at the RAWR of 6200#.
Puts be OVER the MFG GVWR of 10,100#

Swapping gears gives you more 'grunt' but does not change the Axle Weight Ratings

Get your truck WEIGHED 'Camp Ready' (all passengers- humna/pets, all cargo (backpacks, stuff in cab, stuff in bed etc)
See what your Rear Axle Weight is.......subtract that from the RAWR of 6200#
That will be how much addition weight your rear axle can 'carry'
Subtract 5th wheel hitch weight from that number..........that is available pin weight

Figure 22% of 5th wheel GVWR for a 'WET PIN' weight

2017 F20 crew cab 4x4 ------might have 3000/3100# available depending on actual weight on truck rear axle
That puts you in the 14K GVWR for 5th wheel (real world towing)
  • Mark the drive shaft or tape a length of string on the drive shaft

Roll the vehicle one tire valve rotation

Then count the number of sting wraps on the drive shaft, or have someone count the chaulk marks on the drive shaft

Whole turns is the first, whole number of the diff ration...3 turns...4 turns, etc equal 3.xx or 4.xx

Fraction of a string wrap will be the fractional portion of the diff ration...3/4 turn, then X.73, etc

    Remember to remove the string

Got some folks yelling at me on another forum...guess they didn't remember to remove the string...
