Fifth Wheel Hitch Rails

Hi gang,
I'm looking at a used truck that had a fifth wheel hitch installed. They took the hitch off but left the rails. As I don't plan on using it for hauling a fifth wheel, What will be the harm in taking off the hitch rails? I assume I need to plug the holes somehow. Thanks for your help.

I would pull the rails but leave all the mounting brackets under the bed in place. Easy to put them back in if you ever move up to a big boy trailer. :)

I don't carry mulch or gravel in my truck - that's what trailers are for. With other stuff it hasn't bothered me, to the contrary they make great additional tie down points. If OP is going to pull them I'd agree on leaving the brackets and I'd even use the bolts to plug the holes, and that way it would be easy to put them back in again. But personally I'd just leave them in place.
  • I left one set in my truck when we went back to a travel trailer. I had two sets. One set put the pin 3" ahead of the axle. Other set 12" behind axle. The remaining set I now use as tie down points for motorcycle straps for the "stuff" we take with us now that the bed is available again. I intend to fill the holes with plugs but after a year, I still haven't done it. No harm done.

  • No plans for 5th wheel? I would remove them and find proper size plugs to close the holes for aesthetics if nothing else. Even bolts and washers would work fine. You can always put them back later or include with truck when time to sell/trade.
  • No harm....just holes in bed

Plug them if you want or leave them open (added drainage)

ACE Hardware is good place for various size plugs of differing materials
  • I would leave them. You can get a gooseneck adapter even. It's only half a truck if it can't tow the big boy trailers.
