Finally.........our journey begins!

Finally! We have taken our first step on hopefully a wonderful truck camper journey. Thank you to everyone here for helping since we joined the site last summer. This forum was/is awesome!

After missing out on a two nice Lance 820’s in the last month we got/bought one today. It’s a 2001 that had been kept inside and hardly used. People got divorced shortly after buying it. It looked like it was in great shape, except for just lack of use. Everything works, no leaks, and no rust or rot in the wings. He is delivering it on Feb. 4, I will post some pics when we get it.

When we decided we wanted to take this journey, our goal was to try and purchase a truck and camper for less than 30,000. I’m happy to say, we accomplished our goal!

Now comes the scary/fun part, actually learning how to use it. We have never done this, so we are total newbies. We have leaned so much from all these great forums, (Lance, NATCOA, Open Roads) But still have much to learn.

Ok, now in need help on what we need to initially do when we get it home. These are the items it came with for reference.

-2 Batteries, (don’t know what size), one in battery compartment and one in generator compartment as spare
- Two 5 gallon propane tanks. They look brand new, but I’m sure need re-certified
- Happyjack tie down system. Would have to be taken off his truck and put on mine.
(I am buying at Torklift system with Fastguns on the cheap that will work with my truck, and think I will use that instead.)
- Cabover struts (Don’t know if I will use these or not yet)
- Some 4 wheel roller dollys that go under the jack stands that he made. He said it makes it easier to load on truck. You can get close and then move Camper a little to get perfect.
-I did notice that he had some kind of hookup inside his truck bed up by the driver’s side that he plugs into. I don’t have that on my truck. I figured the camper plug would plug into the back truck connector? Probably something to do with a special Lance cord I’m guessing.

We will be just setting it in our driveway initially when we get it home. Here are our initial plans:
- Clean it up inside and out, mostly just dust.
- Get our new truck ready to haul the camper. (Tie downs, Airbags, etc.)
- Check propane tanks and get them re-certified and filled.
- Check into buying an ADCO cover for it.

Now, what else should we be looking at or doing to it?

It will probably be a couple months before we are actually going to be able to use it, and we will be going to a place a few minutes from home on our first trip in case we forget something.

We are so excited, thanks again for all the help and help to come in the future!

  • Definitely try to spend several nights in the camper while in your driveway or yard.
    You learn while at home.

    Congrats and enjoy your travels.
  • Check all of the caulking or simply recaulk.

Check into having a custom camper cover made.
  • Congratulations and welcome to the truck camping world where you can go anywhere and tow anything. Making memories visiting and sightseeing all of the amazing places there are to see is what it's all about. Bka0721 sums it all up for you nicely. Enjoy the adventure of what's waiting out there for you.
  • I just got my first tc, and look forward to going to Alaska this summer. Have been across the country twice with 25' travel trailer and loved it. Going north with out wife, just my buddy. I have a 2008 Sunlite tc. Using on a 2009 gmc half ton heavy duty suspension. No air bags. They may leak. I put on some 9 way Rancho xl 9000 shocks on back, struts on front.. You may want to put an "Active suspension" on your rear leaf springs.I bought my TC from East Coast truck campers in Chesterfield NH. They help me set it up. They have a good web site.
  • Great and welcome to the Truck Camping world of making memories and visiting and seeing some amazing places.

Your plan is a great one and yes, take it slow and ask lots of questions here. There are more people better at lists and sharing what they need and don't need for Weekend and Vacation use of their Truck Camper.

One of the best pieces of advice I received when I first started out (btggraphix) was to take short trips (I didn't have the luxury of a Driveway) and in your case, Driveway. Keep a piece of paper on the inside cabinet door of your TC for the first year of use and record anything you might feel you need or have forgotten. Don't rely on your memory upon your return. While in your driveway, try to stay in it overnight during the different seasons you might be using your TC. From this POV you will discover what needs to be done without ever leaving home. Plus you will be able to test out and experiment with all the functions of your camper, Furnace, water pumps and systems, shower, Fridge, Windows, Electrical systems/Convertor, Storage, Sinks, Black/Grey/Potable Tanks and the list goes on, before ever leaving your driveway!

    Have fun.

  • Congratulations!

I started a similar "project" some 14yrs ago with $25K as truck+camper price goal and was able to beat it!

    A few thoughts:

    - Lance campers have a special plug that requires equally special wiring to your truck, while a handy person could install one in the bed of your truck, check your local Lance dealer for details.

    - The best way to store a camper is indoors followed by under cover of a car port. Sun/UV light does not play nice on RV sealants. While your new-2-you TC has been stored well, it might be a good idea to reseal (or have it resealed).

    - The batteries that come with your purchase may (or not!) be of any use. Don't be surprised that they likely need to be replaced.

    - Enjoy! Many of us think/feel that a TC is the "ultimate" in RV experience.

(I'm sure that others will chime with valuable suggestions)

    Again, congratulations!
