First long pull

There are too many people concentrating on the weight of this or that trailer. The aerodynamics of each individual trailer will make more of a difference than the weight. A bad wind day has had me as low as 7.5, and a good day I got 12, once. Wind always makes more difference than these small differences in weight.

Before you start arguing with me, understand I drove hazmat tankers for 17 years. There was a work day I got better mileage loaded than empty.

BTW, I get 8mpg with a 5.7 Hemi towing 4,000 pounds. But I am traveling 70 mph crossing the plains into a headwind to get to the mountains.

you're towing and your motor isn't broken in.

The truck is a 1999, it isn't broken in yet?

Everybody I talk to gets 10 mpg give or take a couple. Your results sound typical.

I always try to fuel at 1/4 tank only took walking to a gas station years ago to teach me that lesson. Silverado ran out while showing 1/8 tank

I need to stop within 200 miles anyhow and we usually go to places we've been before so stations and stops are pre planned. I've been lucky so far in not running out. I've thought about taking the 5 gallon gas can with us just in case.

I get 9.8 with a 2006 Chevy and it doesn't use Urea so should be better. your's seems normal. I tow at 67 and run N Va to either Co, Tx, or Ok and back plus Wrn NY state. Don't worry about fuel mileage, you're towing and your motor isn't broken in.I will challenge anyone to hook on my Arctic Fox and get better mileage at the same speed.

It has been my experience that almost any combo will get only about 9 to 10 mpg on the flat, no wind. Unfortunately this is a rarity.

Best mileage is between 50 to 55 mph but most travel at 60 to 65 mph. Even then you will be passed by everything on the road.

The reason for a bigger and stronger vehicle is performance and stability. Bigger and stronger rarely translate to more mpg.

As mentioned you are pulling a barn with a large frontal area down the road. Your mileage sounds typical.

I have a 2011 F-150 with a 5.0 L gas engine. I did a 300 mile tow this spring pulling my 4580 pound TT at 59-63 mph. I got 11.2 MPG. I was driving carefully there was no wind on the way there and a side/rear wind on the way back.

I have gotten as high as 17 and as low as 8 pulling a 27' bunkhouse with an F350 6.0 diesel. I check each tank and maintain the average (boredom does that to a guy). Overall average is about 12 over several thousand miles. The 17 mpg was coming down from the mountains with a slight tail wind. 8 mpg was on flatter Idaho desert I84 with constant 20 mph gusting to 30ish headwinds. The mileage was the least of my concerns on that trip.
