First long trip with TRD supercharger

We took our first long trip (5000 km) with the Trd Supercharger installed on my 2011 5.7 Tundra. I was absolutely amazed how well this truck pulls our Jayflight 28BHS up the Grapevine and other hills travelling the I5 to Southern California. I read many stories about how well the new half tons tow and must agree that this is true considering you stay at a max of 7500-8000 lbs but cannot say without exaggerating the massive difference bumping torque up to 550ftlbs torque! With the truck never exceeding 3500 RPMs on any hill still holding the postedspeed limit has me eager for our next trip. Are there other members out there running the 5.7 Tundra with this set up?

  • I've had the TRD SC, headers, and dual exhaust on my 2000 4.7 since 2003 due to the fact that I was really running the engine hard in our western mountains pulling our 5600 TT. The SC/exhaust kit really made a huge difference and a much more comfortable drive. I no longer had to shift down two gears to climb a 6% grade and I didn't have to go full throttle going up on ramps.

    I no longer have the TT, put I still enjoy punching the Tundra just to hear that SC whine, sweet exhaust sounds, and the great accelleration. After 12 years, the engine and trans are both doing just fine, thank you.

  • Toyota has been supplying the TRD kit for the 5.7 since 2007 and when installed by them the vehicle warranty remains in place for the entire drive line for the factory term. In 80-85F temps, the trans temp guage does not move from normal nor does the engine temp. The Supercharger has its own inter cooler and reservoir. I notice that even in a strong headwind, which I hardly notice compared to pre SC throttle is not being pushed. In fact it seems like the truck works far less than it did prior. You are so right about the trans being the weak link and I see so many folks towing in gears higher than they should not using common sense when approaching a hill or climb! I have always believed that it's better to drop a gear before the trans goes under load and manually control it with respect and have been successful to not have to donate a pay check to the local shop! if it wasn't for the warranty on the truck remaining, I would have been far more apprehensive to add this to what I feel was a high priced half ton. We plan to use the rig a lot this summer and will keep a progress report coming if members show an interest. Cheers
  • That sounds like a great set up! I hope that you where not overheating the engine or transmission. I can only wonder how long the transmission will last with 550 foot pounds of torque, and the applied higher than average horsepower of towing a trailer for long distances.

    Normally pickups only put out the rated HP for the 7-8 seconds it takes to get from a stop sign to freeway speeds, then will be at 1/4 throttle or less for a long enough time that the engine will not overheat. But towing a trailer, and running 50% of full throttle for 30 minutes into a headwind can warm things up a lot more.
