I hate the shift points on my truck’s tow/haul...never use it, but I have the diesel engine brake which I do use and I really like.
I am talking gassers here not sure about the transmission on a diesel but when using tow haul you lower your trans fluid temps by as much as 12 to 20 degrees depending on the road conditions. As far as never using tow haul do whatever floats your boat but the engineers that built that truck probably know more than most of us.
Under heavy loads or while towing the tow haul shift points will be far more efficient. Also, and it is a minor point, but there are lots of places where your diesel's engine brakes use is prohibited, no such restrictions with a gasser.

Sorry NOT true. Light duty diesel trucks have exhaust brakes not engine brakes. Not applicable to those posted signs.
