For those on the 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton bubble...

After upgrading from a half ton at the beginning of summer, we just got back from our first long trip involving steep hills with our new 3/4 ton. Just wanted to pass on our experiences. If you're trying to make a decision, go with the 3/4 ton. The experience is so much better. I know there will be those that say it can be done with a half ton and, yes, it can but the experience is much less stressful when you're not always concerned with the tow vehicle. Towing with the half ton was fine for short distances that didn't tax the vehicle but for trips of hundreds of miles up and down steep grades, a tow vehicle that is not maxed out, or close to it, is a wonderful feeling. Hill start assist? Wonderful thing. Saw other trucks stopping in traffic on steep hills try to get started and rolling backwards several feet or gassing it and spinning the tires on wet pavement. Grade braking? Awesome. Speed never increased more than 3 miles and hour regardless how steep the descent and I never touched the breaks. Always in control, never felt like the trailer was pushing the truck. I realize it is very dependent on circumstances but having a better tow vehicle makes traveling a much better experience.

Most of them do not need it as they are gasoline V8’s. Just gear down.
  • None of the newest 1/2T's have even to the grade braking the diesels do.
  • While I agree HD pickup is more “truck” than a 1/2 ton, most of your reasoning is based on features that are also in 1/2 tons! But nice story.
    Heres my story.....
1/2 tons are soooo much better. Mine has grade braking, hill start assist, 6 speed auto, locking rear axle, built in brake controller. My 3/4 ton is horrible, it’s loud, rough riding, none of the above features......but it does have more HP and close to 3x the torque of the halfer!
    1/2 is a 2016
    3/4 is a 2007
  • Most 1/2 ton owners that claim their truck couldn't do the job choose the wrong 1/2 ton truck.....or had a low performing older 1/2 ton truck.
Example many say their F150 had a 6800-7000 gvwr and small 3800 rawr small 1300-1400 lb payloads.....
If they had chosen wisely they would have had the F150HD 8200-7850 gvwr/4800 rawr/2400-2500 lb payloads or a step down...
    F150 7500 gvwr with 4550 rawr with 2000-2200 lb payloads..or
F150 7050 gvwr and 4050 rawr and 1700-1800 lb payloads.

Or GMs 1500 max tow (NHT package) at 7600 gvwr and 4300 rawr/6.2 engine/8 speed tranny.

But anywayz glad you like the 3/4 ton with 9.5-10k gvwr and 6000-6500 rawr. These trucks are good for real world 3k lb + in the bed payloads plus the come with the diesel.
  • Is it a 1/2 ton versus 3/4 ton issue or just a newer vehicle?

My situation is opposite of yours but it is more due to a newer TV than necessarily 1/2 or 3/4 ton.

2004 Chevy 3/4 ton and now a 2015 Ford F150 both pulling a 20' cargo trailer with between 6,000 to 10,000 lbs. depending on trip. The F150 out pulls, out stops, and the cab is more comfortable. Now this being said if I were to get a 2015 F250 I might be even more impressed but no need as the F150 walks circles around the older 3/4 ton. It is amazing the new trucks and what they are capable of towing and hauling.
