Ford 7.3 turbo: exhaust too loud

Purchased (new to me) Ford 250, 7.3 ltr turbo, 126000 miles. Exhaust has been modified and has big tip. Wife says too loud. (I have to agree) Saw 4.5 inch tip silencer that attaches to tip of exhaust to supposedly quiet it down. Has anyone used? Will it restrict exhaust too much and inhibit performance? Etc Thanks

Thanks for feedback folks! It's good to have such a great source of info. Yes, it is loud and I didn't mention it but AREA 13 also hit a note with the word 'drone'. Depending on the RPM the "drone" will sound off and when she changes gears/RPM it will ease off. If kept 50-55 in OD not bad but drone is only additional irritant at good xway speed. Good ideas and help. More welcome but think we narrowed it. Thanks

Good luck. It's a great engine properly maintained.

7.3's are naturally loud. Add a custom exhaust and you can get mind numbly loud.

Take it to a shop and have them take a look and give an opinion.

    Thanks!

I doubt that much of the noise is from the exhaust!! The 7.3 and 1st and 2nd gen Cummins are naturally noisy due to the single event combustion.
You will get over it once you tow with it.

First off, does it have a muffler? 7.3's are pretty loud and have an irritating drone with no muffler.

If it doesn't have a muffler, get one, problem solved.

I have a 7.3 with custom 4" exhaust and a high flow muffler and it sounds good and not too loud.
  • A 7.3 PSD is very loud compared to late model diesel engines. You can go back to the stock muffler which will reduce the noise vs. an open exhaust, however even with the stock muffler in place the 7.3 will be far from quiet.
  • The best way to queit down is go buy a stock 4 inch muffler
I put a MBRP 4" turbo back exhaust on my dodge it was way to loud pulling my trailer so i took my stock muffler and open it up and weld 4"pipe in to it and put back on my truck queit right back to stock loudness. never lost any performance just noise
  • You need to get a straight through muff like Peninsular, Coleman ect. The bigger the better. IMHO don't mess with tips.
