Ford Diesel 6.0 really that bad?

I spent over $4000 bullett proofing my 06 6.0 and then started having turbo problems. Traded it in my current 08 Duramax. Love my GM, zero issues or problems.

No Not all bad, But they are for sure the least reliable production diesel. I would love to know the real percentage that had major issues.
They can be a great engine, but I think Ford tried to get too much out of them.

Way too many owners I have talked to have had significant issues.

I recently sold my 2005 without issues after 110K miles only because I wanted a bigger truck. I agree that maintenance and how it was run is big factor in what you got in return. Mine was a XL trim, but had some expensive upgrades like 19.5" wheels, 17K lb SuperHitch and in-dash Nav which resulted in good resale.

My 2005 had numerous very expensive problems, I now have the 6.2 gas.

These days I would not do any expensive deletes of emissions equipment. Dealers wont always knowingly take them on trade (or even work on them) and testing may be just around the corner no matter where you live.

I had a 2003 and it was a pretty good truck in the time I owned it but I also spent $3500 on preventative measures such as egr delete, etc so I wouldn't have issues. I traded it off last year because the oil cooler was plugging up despite 3 coolant changes and coolant filter installation in the time I owned it, was stumbling cold which I think was injectors getting weak, and a bed plate leak that was driving me nuts dripping oil all over my garage floor. It was a fully loaded Lariat in immaculate condition and I was offered $8-10k on trade. I finally got $16k on trade when similar era Dodges and GMs were getting $10k more.

If you are going to buy one, get an Oasis report to ensure it's relatively clean, buy it cheap because resale sucks and spend the money bulletproofing it.

I feel much better about travelling far from home now with our new Cummins.

Ugh, do yourself a big favor, don't go from Fords BEST engine, to it's worst!!

If you are thinking of looking at a diesel, do yourself a favor and if looking at years 2003 to 2010 don't think Ford.

Both GM and Ram of those years are far more reliable than the Ford. Unless you are looking at a larger trailer you should be fine with a strong gas engine.
If looking to go to a larger trailer, then also look at at least a 350/3500 SRW for the payload.

In a word, YES.
Even the bast*rds of ISIS don't use em. They seem to prefer the 6.7 or the gasser.
