Ford F 150

I tow smaller (24 ft and 5500 lbs) than the OP, but I can say from my drive this week that the F-150 can be a good tow vehicle when set up right. Mine is the 2016 XLT 3.5 EB 4x4 with tow package (not max tow as far as I know - the dealer was changing ownership when I bought it and the new staff had far more expertise with Chevy than Ford).

I towed about 1300 miles over 5 days in stormy winds through Nebraska to central Iowa and back home to Colorado. While there were some interesting moments that took a bit of getting used to (semis passing on the 4-lanes), after a couple of days I was taking it one handed about half the time and having no issues.

You have about 6 more feet of TT for the wind to push on, so that gives you a bit of a disadvantage over me, but with the proper setup and a good WDH I don't see why it can't be done. The hills should be no problem at all.

As others have mentioned, payload will be your enemy. Tongue weight plus cargo adds up fast. I only use a little over 1/3 of my 1777 lb cargo capacity with tongue weight, so I have never really worried about that.

I have the 2016 f150 3.5/w max tow package. I pull a SportTrek 33' 8300 GVWR. This truck has no problem pulling this trailer. I would have no problem recommending this truck for the trailer you are looking at. the truck gets 21mpg empty pulling the trailer I've be averaging 12mpg. this is what I expected to get.

I pull a 25 ft TT with a F-150. It does have the max tow package and it is 8 cylinder. No problems here.

Be careful which F150 supercrew cab 3.5 EB engine you pick.

You want a F150 super crew with these GVWR/RAWR packages;

7050 GVWR...4050 RAWR...3.5 EB...1800-2000 bed payload.

7600 GVWR...4550 RAWR...5.0...2000-2200 bed payload.

7850HD GVWR...4800 RAWR...3.5 EB or 5.0...2400-2500 bed payload.

Ford markets the F150 super crew 3.5 EB 6750/6900/7000 GVWR but have those small 3800 RAWR = around 1400-1500 lbs (or less) in the bed before exceeding axle and tire capacities.

Choose the models with a 4050/4550/4800 RAWR for the most actual in the bed payloads.

The problem with the F150 is there are so many darn options ! There is not simply one box to check that says "I want to tow a big tt !"

Hopefully you will find a smart salesperson. Don't forget to order the built in trailer brake controller !


P.S. Just because it has a smaller engine, don't think you will be getting fantastic mileage while towing ! Towing take power. Power requires fuel !!

You should be able to tow the TT with that truck, but if you are buying a new truck, why not just step it up a notch and buy an F-250? That should set some of your concerns to rest. Just make sure that you buy one with a trailer tow package and then buy a good WDH with four point sway control. I have a Sierra 1500 towing about 7500# with an Equalizer hitch. It tows the trailer very well and gets good gas mileage, but if I had bought the trailer first and truck second, I might have elected to buy a 3/4 ton. You can tow a lot with a half ton set up with trailer tow package and good hitch.

Not all F-150 are the same of course, my E-boost 2011 4x4 payload is only 1411 lbs.

I works great with my 25 ft. Dutchmen but I would not pull anything larger.

I have a 2011 F-150 with the 5.0. I didn't like towing with it. It seemed to wiggle around to much. Then one of the origanl tires went bad at 20000 miles. :M After that I put decent tires in it and I love it now. No more wiggle

I know this had nothing to do with engine sizes of tow ratings. I just wanted to say that some of the original Ford products come from the factory with some terrible tires.

My sister in law has had the same problem with her Ford Edge vehicle. She loves the car but, hated the origanl tires. When she traded her first Ford Edge in on her second she made them swap out the tires and kept the (almost new) tires that she had put in her old Edge.

Check out how good of tires you are getting on your new truck before you buy.

You will LOVE that pickup and you will be passing others going up hills! :)

I don't necessarily agree with that. I pull a 33 foot TT (29 foot living space) with my F150. As long as you're setup properly and within the weight limits of the TV, then there's no reason a 1/2 ton can't do the job. My F150 has the 2.7 EB and it tows better than my last F150 that had the V8. There's definitely no lack of power. Sure, I feel the odd bit of sway, but nothing that will make your palms sweat.
