Ford F150 3.7 L V6

I may be looking at one of these trucks. In a super crew 2 wheel drive configuration. It has 3.73 rear axle ratio. And a tow rating around 6000 pounds. This little motor has more power than my 97 F150 had, It gets much better gas mileage. And for my 20 to 30,000 mile per year commute it should be a great choice.

Does anyone have any experience with the F150 and a 3.7 L V6 configuration? The most we will ever tow is probably 4000 pounds worth pop up something like that.

The first car my wife and I bought after we got married was a 94 Pontiac Trans Am. That " hot Rod" only had 265 hp! It's hard for me to believe I'm considering a P6 truck and it's got over 300 hp, and it's naturally aspirated!

I know for towing heavy it's all about torque. My 97 at 330 foot-pounds torque. While this 3.7 later only has about 285 295 some like that.

The reason I'm looking at the 3.7. Is because we are going to have to buy used and in the 2011 2012 model years I'm finding XLT's in the super crew with the 3.7 L V6 in the teens. the EcoBoost and the 5.0 L are running at least five Thousand more dollars. And I know I will get a lot more power but at the expense of fuel economy and initial price. As far as getting a larger camper... Been there and done that.... We want smaller and more efficient.

So anyway long winded post. Has anybody have any experience with the 3.7 L V6 especially in a crew cab configuration?

Thanks!

  • Hi APT, we actually do not have a TV right now other than my wife's 4 cyl kia Sorento. I live in the country and a truck would be especially handy around the house. We have to haul our own garbage to the dump, hunting and fishing. Etc. My 2000 town car is getting long in the tooth.

We don't have a pup yet either and the 6000 lb capacity would open up some really nice options.

    Thanks!

  • Do you need a truck for our commute? You already have one for towing. Get something more comfortable for your DD IMHO.

I'm done with uncomfortable and poor performing daily drivers. I only put about 20k miles/year on my DD. I love my diesel Passat. 38mpg lifetime average. Comparably I only get 22mpg in a 2011 Malibu 4-cyl because it is gutless. The diesel is like a V6 below 3000rpm. V6 in an F-150? No thanks.
  • Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am confident that this motor would more than meet our needs in a truck. The more I read about it the more I like it. The rear axle is the same, the transmission is the same as the trucks with the other motors. The brakes and chassis is the same. The 3.7 should have a bit more payload since the motor is lighter. The 7000 rpm redline will take some getting use to but that should sound really sweet under load.

With this much power from a V6 I am confident that a large pup would be more than a perfect match.

I'm surprised more of these are not being used for lighter weight loads. However, at least from my vehicle searches, there have been a ton of these trucks sold with the 3.7.

    Thanks!

  • These days power is almost never the limiting factor. The reviews I read were all positive and surprising to the reviewers. The 3.7 has more than the 4.6 V8 in our 04 Explorer, which we used to tow our 5200lb loaded full size trailer. You will also be getting it mated to a fantastic 6spd with a gear for every situation. As long as you are not afraid to put your foot in it, let it downshift and do it's job, you should be very pleased with it for your requirements.
  • Havr you driven one yet? The 3.7 is quite an impressive base motor yet no one ever mentions it. If your not gonna get a bigget tt then I would think you would do great with that combo. I was considering one for my 5000# tt but we will probably go bigger in the next few years.

It will rev but it sounds sweet too so enjoy it.

A friend of mine has one he bought new. It's a 2011 supercab though not the crew cab. Not sure what kind of MPG's he gets, but I know he's plenty happy with it towing their ~3,000 lb. pop up. He's retired now and doesn't commute, but he's a long time chrysler man and this is his first Ford and so far he says he is pleased.
  • I just sold the truck in my sig because I have a 25k+ mile per year average, and the fuel economy was draining my wallet too fast... The gas bill was approaching my truck payment every month. Have you thought about a midsize SUV, or something even more FE that could still tow the pup? Just throwing that out there if economy is a real concern.
