I just bought a 2009 Ford F450, 6.0 turbo diesel with 4:30 rear end. I was wondering if there are any F 450 owners out there who can give me an approximate MPG towing a 5th wheel around 15,000 lbs, and also answer some questions about the trailer brake system

If you have a 2009 you don't have a 6.0. You have a 6.4 just FYI

Your 2009 F-450 should have a 6.4 in it. Ford stopped the 6.0 in 2008. Have you checked the VIN # to see what engine it has. The 6.0 should get around 10 to 13 MPG pulling a trailer. The 6.4 should get a little more.I have a 2008 28ft E-450 class C motorhome with the 6.0 and I get about 13 to 13.5 MPG. and 12.5 pulling a toad.

2007 was the last year for the 6.0 The 6.4 with 4:30s will be lucky to get high 13s empty, I barely get 13 with 4:88s cruising at 65, towing is more like 6.5 to 8.

The 4.30:1 rear axle means the engine will be turning fast at all highway speeds. Probably will shift into 4th gear at around 40 MPH under light load.Make sure that it has a engine coolant filter, if it already has one - all the better, and keep it clean! If none has been installed, expect the first to last only about 800 miles, the second 2,000 miles, and the third until fall. You can install it in the heater hose line with a Napa kit #FIL 4019. The filter is FIL 4070. Some install a small ball valve at the inlet and outlet, so they can shut them off, change the filter, and turn it back on, with minimal loss of coolant. I Put a coolant filter on my motorhome when it was new in 1997. I did not change the coolant until it was 10 years old, then replaced the new looking top and bottom coolant lines, as well as install new coolant at that time.The problem with the 6L and 6.4L Fords is that the coolant would clog the oil cooler and exhaust gas cooler, then leak water into the engine, and require a $10,000+ repair bill. The coolant filter prevents both problems.Have fun camping!Fred.

That's all I do when I'm getting 10 mpg towing a little #5000 TT with an F150..
