the 3 valve Tritons from 2005 thru 2008 had opposite issue with spark plugs breaking off in the heads. From late 2008 Ford redesigned the spark plug holes so no issues from that point on.
The 3 valve make significantly more power.
I have an 06 Explorer with 4.6 3 valve, so no need to ask me how I know about the spark plugs :)
Otherwise, I have 190k miles on that little motor and still running strong. Just recently, I had tranny service done at a Ford dealer and the tech told me he gets police cars with those tritons with 300-400 k miles for service.
Thanks for your contribution! I wonder if the 6.8L Tritons 2005-2008 have the issue you are describing. I will definitely have to research it if we don't get an answer here.
