Gas ford f250 vs Chevy Silverado 2500 towing.

I'm trying to figure out which gas truck to buy. Chevy 2500 or f250. Are these the exact same? It looks on my research ford tow rating 12,300 and Chevy 13,000. Unless I'm reading it wrong. Has anyone towed with both? Chevy is cheaper new and looks easier to find the 4.3 gear ration vs 3.7 I think? Numbers may be wrong there. Anyhow any help on helping me decide? Any advice is appreciated. I own a polamino puma that's 8600 lbs dry.

  • Crazy as it seems, for the 2018 model Fords, the F250 can tow 100 pounds more than the F350 in the same config. The weight of the extra springs and a tiny bit more I guess.
  • Either one will work for that size trailer. The GM will have standard 4.10 gearing, and the Ford 3.73. You can order the Ford with 4.30, if you think you need more towing capacity. Buy the one you like, can't go wrong with either!

We have a 2011 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 with 5.7L engine and six speed transmission. It struggles to pull my 7500 lbs. It can't stay in cruse control on anything but an absolute flat highway. I get 9+ mpg whether towing or around town. The only time the mileage is decent is when on the highway which I never am.
If I had to do it again I'd buy a pickup truck and put a back on it.

Something does not match up. The engine should have been a 6.0L with 352HP 382 ft lbs of torque with a 6 speed tranny. Should have towed OK, in less somehow it had the 5.3L.

  • I'm dealing with the same issue, the one thing that I keep finding that makes a difference is fuel economy. The "shootouts" with 3/4 ton trucks, ike gauntlets, and otherwise, it seems the Fords get better mileage towing 10k loads. I stay watching here for reports of similar comparasions that show otherwise, but havent seen one.
The GM's may pull uphill slightly faster, but the Fords seem more efficient when towing.
And my main area of choice was Ford vs Ram.
  • I seriously doubt you will find two hoots difference. If their within your two ratings, then go drive both and pick the one your wife likes best.
