Indeed, I agree with Tom, Nissan as an example recommends between 50% and 100% FALR. I have found that 100% on my Nissan truck works very well for my application.

I would suggest reading the owner manual for your tow vehicle and go with the manufacturer reccos.

As for gas mileage, my last three days have been into a head wind, or quartering headwind....so about 9.8 avg has been the number.

I pull a 21' TT with a V6 Frontier; I get 20 mgp w/o the TT and 11 with. On hilly ground it drops to just over 9 mpg, so I think your mileage drop is pretty normal.

RVing is not for everyone. I have friends who would rather die than drive 65 mph. or stop before it gets dark. Pulling a barge behind them and maintaining a second home is not on their "to do" list either.

Personally the convenience of my own bed, bath, restaurant, coffee maker and dog offset the drawbacks, not to mention the friendly folks you meet.

IT ISN'T THE 8-10 MPG THAT MAKES RV-ING COSTLY, ITS HAULING AND FEEDING THOSE MONSTER DOGS EVERYONES GOTTA HAVE. THEN THEY MAKE YOU GET UP AND LET THEM OUT EARLY IN THE MORNING. THERE GOES THE VACATION! LOL

We pull a 26 foot TT that weights 7600 lbs with a gas Tundra and average 8-9 MPG. Climbing hills doesn't seem to matter - it is all about speed. When I venture over 62 MPH the gas mileage drops like a rock, and the slower I go the better it gets.

Fuel consumption drop of no more than about 40% given same road at same speed when tow vehicle is solo.

Run a 200-mile loop back to the same filling station on the Interstate. Use cruise control.

Anything much above 40% is worth investigation. Trailer axle alignment is nearly never correct. TT tire pressure should be to sidewall max. Bearings and brakes should be serviced even if brand new. All vehicle service should be to book standard less 15% deductions for time/mileage.

Only travel with a tailwind. There's no telling where you will go, but you will get good mileage getting there. Another trick the "high miler's use is to calculate mileage from their fuel gauge, "I only used a quarter tank to go two hundred miles."

The secret is to reset the DIC at 50mph and only consider the mileage over flat ground with a tailwind. ;)
