Depends...what is the GVW of your truck now? If you are significantly over that with your pin and travel weights, and you may be, then you may want to upgrade. If not...no need. Personally, I feel as if I have to have a diesel 350/3500 hauling about 14500, but the extra weight of the engine really eats up GVW on a srw. My new Ford F330 Supercab diesel has a gvw of 11500, but as equipped only allows me an extra 3560 of weight before I go over gvw.
All things being equal, a diesel is a much better towing experience but requires slightly more maintenance.
