There is not much other than a new motor will get you beyond maybe 9MPG. Those old school big blocks were simply gas hogs. You do realize that all the work your doing to the motor can only make matters worse. To get HP you need fuel.
You might be better switching the old inefficient carbuetor for electronic fuel injection.
