I'm gathering information for a woman friend who is in the market for a later 1T srw gasser pickup to pull a 5er. I used to be pro-GM for gas engines until I owned 93 and 2000 GMs and the plastic intake gaskets and their totally cr@p electronics on the entire cars ruined me on GM. I've been able to find good info on the 6.4 Hemi and the 6.2 Ford but not much on the GM 6.2. How reliable and fuel efficient are they? Does anyone have 100k+ miles on one and how did it do? Is it true they need expensive valve train maintenance at 100k miles. Any other real-world experience on them? TIA! Craig

No 6.2 motor for the 1 ton GM's. They are still using the very reliable L96, 6 liter motor in the 1 ton trucks.

The GM 6.2L is not available in the 2500 or 3500 yet, even though GM keeps saying it is coming. Their gas in the ¾ & 1 ton models is the 6.0L and there are very good reports on the later models, but NOT so good on the early to mid 2000 models. I have the 6.2L in what they called their heavy(NHT) ½T and am very pleased with it.

Ok, thanks! I've also read the 6.4 Hemi is not flex fuel but I can't find any more reading on that. So what do you do when e85 is the only fuel available? Craig

You are correct and I think this one of the reasons GM is not using the 6.2 in the HD trucks yet.

California has it own quirks and the use of ethanol in all grades is one of them. In Idaho, 91 has no ethanol and about ½ the regular gas in the state does not have ethanol.

Not in my state. And I would find it hard to believe it is that way in any other state. It goes like this.

Ethanol is higher octane than gasoline and is subsidized by the government; so that makes it a cheap octane additive. Ethanol is also an oxygenating agent so the EPA likes that.

So if you were a refinery and needed a high octane gasoline additive that is cheap what would you put in your low octane gasoline to make it a high octane gasoline? Yep, ethanol. :)

Most likely the 5er will be well under 15k. She wants a small TH for a RZR and to go into tight places. I'd still like to know more about the 6.4 and if ethanol, in a pinch, would hurt it. Is it also true that 91 octane is usually no ethanol? Craig

Craig, you probably know that with any of the gassers, that are towing heavy, you would want lowest gearing. If your friend needs a 1-ton, that tells me a fairly heavy FW.

In the Chevy & Ram, you'd want the 4.10, and in the Ford 4.30. I am most familiar with Ford, and the 6.2 is very proven. It is also flex fuel ready. The 4.30 gears are harder to find on the lots, you'd likely have to order.

You have not said as to FW size, but the 6.2/4.30 is rated up to a 15,000+ lb. FW.

My father in law has the 6.0 in his Chevy. Great engine, and seems to make plenty of power for him. Its one of the "older" gas engines in heavy duty pickups, but that's because its so dependable. I'm not a GM guy AT ALL so I can't attest to their long term maintenance schedule, but from what I understand its a pretty darn good engine.

I would just be concerned about the abysmal fuel mileage in a 1 ton pulling a 5er with gas. Then again, with the cost savings versus a diesel, you can buy a LOT of gas... so what do I know?

I don't believe the 6.4 Hemi is flex fuel. However, the 6.0 is.
