GM Canyon - Colorado

Just stopped at the GM dealer for service -- happened to see two GM Canyon parked in the lot.

One a 'X-cab version with jump seats in rear, and a small access door. One a 'D-cab version with full seats in rear and large access door.

Really, really like the shorter / small door version -- looks more streamlined and compact. And, we (personally) don't often need the rear seat except for storage anyway.

The x-cab' version looks more like the wing-door style of the older 2013 and earlier model of the GM 1500/2500 trucks. The door open from inside, no exterior handle - so, a cleaner look.

4x4 version looks more like a truck, 2x4 version looks more like a fake truck ... dipped lower in the front.

All decked out TOL Dual Cab 4x4 stickers at $44k, and the X-cab four cylinder version stickers at $24k .. That's a LOT of money for 4x4 and the upgrades that are primarily for "looks" and electronics, altho' it had leather seats and every option available.

Based on that - I'd predict this truck will eventually replace the 1500 models, and GM will produce Canyon / Colorado trucks, and next up a 2500 / 3500, and delete 1500 model totally ... The size, just to look at it, is not significantly smaller than the 1500 models... and the price is not significantly less either.

The short bed model looks - well, short. The long bed model is not a lot longer, and with a X-cab layout, a nice refined look -- the dual door configuration looks like a scaled down version of the larger Dual Cab, only smaller and looks bulky or boxy, not very attractive to my "truck eye".

If we didn't haul a 3000 lbs Lance camper around, we'd probably pick one up and drive it away. Nice looking truck and a LOT easier to park.

Claims 22 mpg with the four cylinder - so, not a great bonus in that regard.. We get 16-18 empty on highway in the 6.0L gasser.

  • I pulled a 5,500 lbs (loaded weight on a CAT scale) 25' TT all over eastern USA (including some in the Appalachian Mts) with a '05 Dodge Dakota for 8 yrs. It had a 4.7 V-8 and a 3.92 r/e. While pulling, I got 10.3 mpg and never felt I was underpowered or out of control. I agree there is a need for a mid-sized capable TV that can be purchased for $5,000 less than a full-sized truck. Camp on!
  • Stupid vehicle. It's 95% the price of a Silverado, but half as capable.

I got a chance to sit in one over the weekend and crawl all over it. I'd like to drive one. I looked at a 2WD LT model with leather. Crew cab..and it prices out at just over 32k with the V6.

7,000 lbs towing and nearly 1500 lbs of payload. Pretty roomy interior too.

I'm not sure it will replace the 1500 silverado yet. But its a very practical size truck for most average use. In my hunting days I preferred a smaller Truck. This one would meet all my needs in a truck.

    Thanks!

Looks like it might for many in the US, be a replacement. Although your towing numbers would be downgraded here, with that car 3.6 engine. i.e a Sprinter 3500 is rated at 7500lbs in the US. Here 4,400lbs or n/a for towing
Mercedes-Benz specifies a braked towing capacity of 2000kg for all variants of the Sprinter. Payload ranges from 1280kg (318 CDI LWB with super-high roof) to 2990kg (518 CDI LWB cab chassis for 5.0-tonne GVM).Mar 25, 2008
  • I looked at the Z71 long box, and liked what I saw, although it lists for $4500.00 more than an equivalent Tacoma.
