Or "SUVs with Beds" as I have heard them being refered too. Still they have that function here. A week ago a woman passed me with two very young children asleep in the back seats. Today a woman in her early 70's parked a new Mazda BT-50, sibling of the Global Ford Ranger near a Cafe and Chemist. They with SUV's are the new "car" substitutes. RobertRyan wrote:

Yes, they would not want them to outshine the bigger pickups. Our pickups are not really made for utility use, they are mostly passenger vehicles that can carry light, bulky things in the beds. Engines are much more powerful than they used to be for towing, but payloads are less, especially in the smaller trucks. Toyota used to sell a pickup with a 2500 lb. payload but today's Tacoma barely is rated at half that much.
I'd love to see a return to a compact pickup with decent payload, a long bed, a choice of engines (gas and diesel) and transmissions (auto and manual).- RobertRyanExplorer

Why not an inline 5 cylinder diesel .
Mercedes sold I-5 diesels in the late 1970's to the late 1980's in their E class and S class cars.
Canyon/ Colorado has I 5 gasser now , correct ?
Too expensive, it would require a new diesel design. The Holden Colorado and Isuzu Dmax although basically very similar chassis's have VERY DIFFERENT Diesel engines. - RobertRyanExplorer

Just bring the Holden Colorado or Isuzu D-Max diesel over and be done.

Every will point at you and say funny things, but now if that is a 1 ton diesel with dulley, Banks, lot of extra chrome, you know they will line up along the road jumping up and down with smile on there face.
Gm announced it will offer a diesel option in its small trucks-

Not designed as a big tow vehicle by any means but maybe it is a step towards a 1/2 ton diesel option. - jaycocamprsExplorerJust bring the Holden Colorado or Isuzu D-Max diesel over and be done.
- blt2skiModeratorThe 4.5L V6 was a 6.6 dmax in a V6 configuration. Really no different than GM did with the venerable 350, looped 2 cylinders off, made it a 90* V instead of 60 IIRC, or the other way around, and they had a 4.3 V6 that went into a number of smaller rigs. Same basic parts as the 350. Really no different than Ford with the 4.0 v6, 5.4 v8 and 6.8 v10. All used the same pistons, rods, bearings etc. Way cheaper on the production end of things.
