I find it to be kind of interesting that people on this forum have been saying for years things like "My 2003 Cummins has all sorts of power." or "who needs a truck that can pull 30,000 lbs". Now that a manufacturer is targeting the small RV market with a smaller truck none of us have any interest in it.
Well... that's not the argument that I was making. The OP was comparing a true 3/4 ton truck to a half ton truck with meager payload. That is why I made the comment about 2 cars that are so different.
But to speak on your comment, many people (myself included) have advocated for a tweener vehicle.
I want a vehicle that was in between a half ton and 3/4 ton for payload. The Nissan has LESS payload than a half ton... not interested.
I want a vehicle that was between a half and 3/4 ton in price. The Nissan costs MORE than my Ram... not interested.
I want a vehicle with BETTER fuel mileage than a 3/4 ton truck. The Nissan doesn't appear to have that either... not interested.
Just because someone makes a vehicle doesn't mean that it meets the needs for which we have advocated. Every reason for which I would want a vehicle like this, this Nissan fails to provide.
These were all the points that were brought up after the Nissan/Cummins hit the market. I looked at an XD for my wife this Fall. They slashed the heck out of the pricing. They are all still there at the dealership and that was months ago. They just really are not selling very well, at least out here. Fully loaded, they are pretty well appointed. I liked the interior, exterior is homely to me. I might have bought one because it is such a good deal, but after researching the MPG on the little Cummins which is poor, and the wife was not that enthusiastic about the idea. We decided not to but I would not have been against the idea of buying one. It would have simply been for transportation, I doubt it would pull anything.
I think their market for this truck is just too small, it really does nothing very well, cant compete with the big three in power or economy. Pricing after seeing the rebates may help that comparison but MSRP to MSRP they are not that far away, to close to justify the reduction in capacity.
If that little Cummins could reliably hit mid 20's in mpg like the Ecodiesel it would be a different story. However I am seeing mid teens for MPG, which is what I get with Dmax trucks with 3 times the capacity.
