A XD in SV 4x4 trim could be had for 37-38 if you can find one. I tried real hard to get a Chevy and Ram 3/4 ton gas but no one in my area would drop below $41 for either let alone a diesel. 5 to 6k off was the most they would do take it or leave it.
Curious where in Maryland you are seeing those prices.
Ourisman Chrysler in Clarksville has 4x4 2500 crewcabs with the 6.4 being advertised in the low $30's... I'm sure some negotiation is possible.
Tate Chrysler in Frederick has 4x4 2500 crewcabs with the 6.4 advertised in the mid $30's with some options and diesels in the low $40's with some options.
Century Chrysler in Mt Airy has 4x4 2500 crewcabs with the 6.4 advertised for mid $30's with a "get ePrice" button next to them too, indicating even better advertised pricing.
Now, these aren't fully decked out trucks, but they are competent tow vehicles with 3000+ lbs payloads, lots of HP and torque and a true 3/4 ton frame. Again... there is nothing wrong with the Nissan Cummins, but it doesn't appear to do anything better than a true 3/4 ton truck and its at least as expensive as a 3/4 ton truck.
To me, I don't gain anything and I don't save any money... that's not the vehicle for me. I am not a bells and whistle's guy. I have a Tradesman (bottom of the line, minimal features) truck with the Cummins engine. I'm more concerned with ability to tow than the "cool factor" or fancy gadgets. Its a truck... its a tool with a purpose.
I'm seeing MSRP for a 2017 Nissan XD SV starting at $39,320 for the gas engine and zero options and 4WD. Too much money for what feels like too little truck for me.
