The time delay mainly protects the AC and can be set for a shorter 15 seconds if the AC is equipped with its own delay…

The shorter time delay is to insure the line voltage has stabilized within the limits before reconnecting…

The one I have is very similar, but only has a 2+min time delay and the company that built it is no longer in business… I am considering replacing mine with the Progressive Industries PT30C 30 Amp Portable…

I guess there is always a theft issue but mine is in a metal box with a place to put a lock and chain (I have never chained mine), and the Progressive one has a metal locking loop on the cord… (not much for securing it)… never experienced a weather related problem with mine…

protection worth having cost money in this case about $300… they are worth it if you use them…

the problem with them I have see people that have them not use them on hot summer days because the voltage fluctuates so much with the overloaded grid that they are always doing their job and shutting down… they often chose to bypass them to stay cool because everyone else is and their air is still working…

Amazon has it for about $250. This looks like a great addition, though I am concerned about the 2+ minute shutdown of the power if under/over voltage is detected. The most likely problem is under voltage. This comes up when the load on the campground's transformer starts approaching rated limits. Generally the condition is transient in which case you really don't need to shut down. Virtually every electronic and refrigeration product can handle transient voltage drops (less than a second or so). Otherwise, I really like what that device does.

Is there any issue with theft? Water damage since the outlet seems to be unprotected?

We leave electric and gas on, though we do turn off the hot water heater. Water is turned off at the riser.

In a CG with so many coming and going most with old undersized electric grids electrical protection is advisable, but just surge protection, well that isn’t the type of protection most needed IMO…

The cost and inconvenience to repair damage far exceeds the few minutes it takes to turn everything on when you arrive. And come on, waiting a few hours for a fridge to cool down is not a camping crisis.

Definitely not a crisis... but a huge inconvenience when coming up every weekend so good thing the SSP-30 automatically resets. Good point.

Again from experience shut your RV completely down and unplug from shore water and electric when leaving it unattended.

RV surge protection is like insurance. How much "risk" of the event and how much "protection" does one invest? One can apply complete 3-tier system (re: Entry at service post, inner core, entry at each electrical plug") and still, one might not have enough protection. One cannot be protected from ALL surge risks.

For me, I apply Service Post protection (that helps reduce surges from main cable entry) and I apply outlet level protection (that helps reduces appliance back feed - like from Coffee pots and AC units). If I had extra $300 laying around, I'd also install EMS-30 with Display as well. But… I don't have $300 laying around. Thus, I use a 2 x Tier system (on permitter only)

Should RVs have Surge protection? IMO, yes. anyone can afford a few outlet level devices ($8 each) and one can afford "minimum" Main Cable entry (like the SSP-30). Having minimum low cost protection is worth it. And if one can afford it, install all 3 x Tier levels as well. But for me and my limited wallet depth, Tier 2 (outer perimeter defence) is good enough.
