Going to be a camp host--have questions.

My son and his wife are going to be campground hosts this summer. I am trying to help him get ready by figuring out the answers to some questions. They will be in a Fleetwood trailer (orbit 20 ft)in a site with no power/sewer/water. There is fresh water hand pump on the site. (Bridger/Teton area) Closest town is 22 miles away.

We are wondering how long a 5 lb propane tank will last running the Refrigerator, hot water heater and possibly the interior heater?

Does it make sense to turn the Hot water heater off until it is needed, or should it be left on 24/7?

Any former hosts have advice regarding hosting?

Thanks
Curly

  • Thanks for the replies. They have ordered a generator, should be here this week. 2nd Propane tank is a good idea, we'll pick one up.
They will have to haul the camper in to town to dump the tanks. Not an ideal situation, but they are young and adventurous.

  • I believe no sewer will be your biggest problem unless they provide pump out service. I would suggest you get a second propane tank so you can use one until it runs out and then have one on hand to replace it while you get it filled. how long it lasts is hard to estimate due to unknown weather conditions. Another problem will be battery life unless you have a generator. Without any hookups it will be a challenge that I would not want to take on but to each his own. Good luck
  • Concerning the HWH. Regardless of the propane supply situation, I only turn it on for showers then turn it off.
