Happijac repair

The camper was off the truck and back on a month ago, and I noticed that one Happijac was really stiff. The motor wouldn't move it, but I cranked it manually. So its time for repair. I printed out the instructions from the sticky on these pages (TCU repairs - Happijac lubrication), and carried them to the shop. Disassembly went fine until I got to the place where I pull the leg assembly out of the jack housing. It is solidly frozen, I assume rusted, into place. I've sprayed blaster into both ends, and tapped hard, for two days. There is no movement so far. Any tips for removing the leg assembly? Tom McCloud
  • It hadn't occurred to me that it might be binding because it was bent, as Joe417 suggested. I checked, and it might be, but less than 1/8". I put a shackle across the top, with threaded rod thru the holes, chain thru the shackle and a second chain on the foot, then a come-along winch going to a tree. After a little persuasion to get it started it came out easily. Inside is a stiff black mess of grease, dirt, water and rust. So now the cleaning and refurbishing can be done. TM...
  • I bought brand new ones and just put them on my camper. See: "what did you do to your camper lately?" thread.

if you were close by, i would give you all 4 of the old ones if you have the same model. Mine were starting to bind and rather than rebuild, I upgraded to the newer version leg. Cost about $1,000 plus shipping. With proper maintenance (which previous owner did not do well), they should last forever.
  • I hope you are able to get them apart. You might want to put a straight edge on the post to verify you don't have a bent jack issue. I couldn't see my bent jack just looking at it.

I had a similar issue a couple years ago. I did get it apart but my issue was that leg was slightly bent, less than 1/8" in the full length.

I had a harder time getting it back together as the lead screw was not centered in the tube due to the slight bend. I got it back together with new grease and since my problem wasn't rust, it was still a bit stiff.

This past year it got a bit worse to the point the motor would blow the fuse. I found that both right side jacks are now bent. Since I haven't bumped the camper while loading, I am assuming that at 1900# each, the 4500s aren't heavy duty enough for the camper.

Since Happijac jacks are over $300 each and the old ones hand crank easily I'm not wasting money with a replacement jack.

I'm going to do it manually until I can replace all 4 with a set of the 4800s or a set of Reico's.
