In my personal opinion. Every one of the big three's HD diesels need a tuner or throttle calibration to me because I wasn't completely happy with any of them on test drives. The pre-2015 6.7L PSD did feel peppier off the than the Cummins did due to the throttle mapping and quicker spooling turbos. However, those very same turbos hurt the PSD in other areas like exhaust breaking which is something I use all the time.
Although just adding a plug in play BD throttle booster without a tuner made the Cummins feel just as spirited off the line and in normal driving. Add a tune or module, and there is no comparison. Mine is not tuned and instead has a module that plugs into the engine harness. It doesn't even touch the ECM. Not that it matters though. The odds of a Cummins failing in the 100k mile warranty period is slim to none.
