Gas or diesel? Yes, it does make a difference.
actually on a remote start and warmup, my diesel warms up pretty darn fast as long as the factory cold start high idle is enabled. Unlike diesels of old, on mine it bumps the idle to about1200 rpm and puts the turbo vanes in max backpressure position. 5-10 minutes and it's up to temp.
start cold and drive takes longer to warm up.
Both my cars will warm up pretty quick idling but faster driving. they both adjust shift point upwards quite a bit on cold start to get the engine to warm up quicker.
Yours must be different than mine. How do you set the high idle when starting with a remote? I have to physically engage it after I start my engine, then I turn on the exhaust brake, and in 5 minutes my cab is warm and toasty. That's why I was never interested in a remote start, cause I didn't know how to do the high idle thing, and the exhaust brake thing. Please- educate me! Thanks!
As far as the original question goes, I myself have always been a warm-up-in-the-driveway guy- when talking gas.
there are two high idles. the one you set with the cruise. it really does not do much for warmup time. it's basically high idle for power take off (PTO). turning on the exhaust brake probably helps.
the other is the high idle for warmup. the manual says how to enable it. how depends on if you have the DIC or not. once enabled it will engage anytime you start when conditions are met.
Once engaged idle goes up, and the exhaust brake is set for max backpressure.
conditions for engaging are
1) temps for water jacket and outside below limits, around freezing
2) parking brake set, transmission in park,
3) no foot on the brake or accelerator.
will engage with either remote start or start from a key.
Does this as far back as the 04.5 LLY, used it quite often on that truck even w/o remote start
Set it up in the DIC on my 15 denali. again works quite well.
default is OFF so you need to look at the manual on how to enable it to automatically come on.
