Here we GO again! Tires/wheels

'03 Cougar 293BH with 15" load range D china blasters. replaced all four over the years and tried in vain to find US built replacements without luck. Ended up with Goodyear Marathons (China) and Shield BCT JK42 (China) The Sheild's were bought in an emergency so they were not my first choice!

Now having to replace one blown Shield and one blistered Shield.

Considering replacing Shield's with Load Range E Maxxis or similar. Rims are rated to 75 psi so full advantage of LRE won't be had, but I'm pretty sure it would be better. Hoping an expert tire wizard will offer advice on mixing LRE & LRD as well as any advantage to increasing LR.

I've read a lot of the past multitude of posts and my head is swimming! Some quick help would be greatly appreciated. New wheels are not an option at this point. Thanks!
  • check these out on tire rack

While I won’t agree with or disagree with you opinion, I do have my own, about tires and about tire dealers…

It easier to form an opinion about tires than the dealers though, but IMHO most dealers are better qualified to be in the fast food business… please don’t take this personal because it isn’t aimed at you and because I have posted the same opinion many times and have been consistent…

It is like your comment and with about the same value, broad based and lacking meaning…

  • I would opt for LT load range D or E and forget about the ST's all together. Much better quality even over the Maxxis.

    Really? All of them?
Do you have a source...just trying to learn.
  • I replaced "D" rated Missions with "E" Maxxis on our 10K GVWR trailer. I did not replace the wheels.

I run the Maxxis at 75psi (they are rated for 80psi). This gives me lots of reserve capacity. I have had no problems with the 75psi and my original rims.

Maxxis tires are about the best choice as ST tires go. Jumping up to a E load rated tire is fine but may not be necessary unless your rig is heavier than stated GVWR. We were able to get 3 years out of our stock China bombs and replaced all four with Maxxis ST tires for peace of mind. They have been performing well over the last 3 years and I expect a couple of more years of service out of them.

I will be replacing my 7 year old Maxxis D ranges for E ranges this weekend. I got great service from the Maxxis tires. By going to the E tires (assuming 225/75R15E) and a rim rated at 75 psi the OP will be able to get a load rating of 2720 per tire (Maxxis inflation chart), any reserve capacity gained is good. BTW, after 7 years of use I damaged one of my Maxxis tires on the last trip I believe when I hit a rough rail crossing at 60 mph. The tire did not blow out but was losing pressure when I got to the CG and I was forced to change it. I just couldn't be certain if the damage was strictly from the impact or if age played a role so I am changing them out.

It depends, Chinese made LT's aren't trust worthy either - in which case I'd much rather have the Maxxiss.

Considered but having trouble finding them in 15s and not able to upgrade to 16s right now.
